Italy are reportedly unimpressed by Warren Gatland’s “disrespectful” decision to make 10 changes to the Wales team for Sunday’s Six Nations match. Robin Davey is not enamoured, either, but for different reasons. Warren Gatland’s latest Wales line-up raises more questions than it provides answers as the build-up to the World Cup gathers pace. Sure, Italy at the Principality Stadium on Sunday may be the right game to experiment, consider options, try out new combinations and establish some depth.
Her teammates want to erect a statue to her, but Stef Collins would rather every penny in basketball is wisely spent protecting a sport in financial crisis. Tom Guntrip talks to the Cardiff Met Archers player, good enough to have won 139 Great Britain caps and respected enough to already have a seat on the sport’s board of directors. In the corner of a small café, in the corner of a small university campus, in the corner of Cardiff, Stef Collins sips her coffee. Stef has spent her life in various corners, but she refuses to be put in one.

Last year’s winner Bob Fowden leads a truly magnificent entry for this Sunday’s Melvyn Evans Motorsport Tour of Epynt. The Llanelli driver, who is celebrating 40 years in rallying this season, will be the number one seed in his ex-works Comline Auto Parts/NGK-backed Subaru Impreza WRC S11. Starting right behind Fowden is six time MSA Asphalt Rally Champion Damian Cole in his Get Connected Ford Fiesta WRC – the Abergavenny driver looking to add to his impressive tally of 18 rally wins on Epynt. Event sponsor Melvyn Evans starts at three, followed by 2007 Asphalt Rally Champion Steve Simpson, both driving Subaru Impreza WRCs. Builth Wells’ Jason Pritchard is keeping fans guessing which of his three cars he’ll contest the event in, with the three time MSA British Historic Rally Champion having an envious choice of a Focus WRC05, Fiesta S2000 and an Escort Mk2. Around 100 cars are expected to start Sunday’s event, which features 75 miles of stages over the famous Epynt military range.

Ashley Williams’ dip in form for Everton this season does not pose a problem for Wales, according to former Wales striker John Hartson. Williams has come in for some fierce flak from Toffees supporters after a series of under-par performances, which culminated in a red card aginst Burnley last Saturday for throwing an elbow. However, Hartson, who will be appearing on S4C’s Mwy o Sgorio football chat show at 6.30pm on Wednesday evening, says that Williams has the character to bounce back into form.
James Davies is finally poised to make his Wales debut against Italy on Sunday. The Scarlets flanker is set to be named as one of 10 changes when coach Warren Gatland announces his team on Wednesday lunchtime. It has been a long and winding road for 27-year-old Davies, who made his Scarlets debut four years ago as a late developer who had spent four years previously with Carmarthen Quins.

Carlos Carvalhal has revealed the story behind his lucky jacket that is helping Swansea City climb away from the relegation zone. The Swansea City manager flashed open the lining of his suit jacket after the victory over Sheffield Wednesday last week to reveal an embroidered message – “Carlos had a dream”. It was a reference to a song the Wednesday fans used to sing about their former boss, before he left the club in late December and went on to join the Swans.
Italy believe Warren Gatland will take the brakes off Wales when they come to Cardiff in the fourth round of the Six Nations on Sunday. Azzurri forward coach Giampiero De Carli has suggested Wales will play with greater freedom now that two defeats have effectively ended their hopes of lifting the title. Both of those losses – to England and Ireland – were characterised by Gatland’s side ending the game strongly, having appeared more cautious in the earlier stages.
