Renato Sanches has not played his last game for Swansea City, manager Carlos Carvalhal has insisted. Bayern Munich’s on loan Euro 2016 star Sanches has been back home in Portugal trying to recover from a hamstring injury and has not played for the Swans since January – sparking rumours that his one-season spell at the club is effectively over. But Carvalhal insists the 20-year-old has only flown south for the benefit of warmer weather and is expected to return to Wales later this month.
Wales’ medal hope Dewi Griffiths has been forced to pull out of the Commonwealth Games due to injury. The Swansea Harrier had been selected for both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Games on Australia’s Gold Coast, but has been suffering from hamstring problems in recent weeks. Griffiths pulled up in the Welsh Cross Country Championships two weeks ago and also had injury problems competing in Slovakia in December.
Warren Gatland is hoping the handing of the captain’s armband to Taulupe Faletau will improve the one area of the back row forward’s game where he falls below expectations. The phrase “lead by example” might have been made for softly-spoken Faletau since he is a player who prefers to communicate through deeds rather than words. When the Bath No.8 speaks up, ears usually have to be leaned in his direction and anyone who misses the start of things has normally escaped the core message.
Llanelli-born James Loveridge struck a crucial blow for his home town club in Nathaniel Car Sales Welsh League. The former Swansea City youth forward, who has also played for MK Dons, Newport County and Port Talbot, scored the only goal for Llanelli Town in their top of the table clash with Penybont FC. Loveridge, 23, […]

The young-at-heart Tumble-based navigator started rallying in 1973, with his very first event being the wonderfully named Doodle Doodle Rally, which started from Swansea University. Since Mike has rallied all over Europe and in the USA – most notably finishing fifth overall on the Laughlin Rally, which went up and down Grand Canyon! He has also guided drivers to podium results on some of Ireland’s biggest rallies, including Galway, Sligo and Wexford.

Live top level rugby on BBC Wales will end this season after the broadcaster opted not to meet the bidding price reached in rights negotiations with the Guinness Pro14. Robin Davey says the final whistle could soon be blown on all live rugby on free-to-air TV. Rugby has become the latest sporting target for the string of pay-per-view companies which have sprung up. Football, boxing, horse racing and cricket are front line sports which have ditched terrestrial television in favour of taking the big money on offer from satellite TV.
The question of WRU governance modernisation is never far from the lips of Welsh rugby fans interested in the sport’s politics. In his latest blog for Dai Sport, Geraint Powell looks at recent developments. Having twice looked at the vexed question of WRU governance modernisation earlier this season (www.dai-sport.com/welsh-rugby-reform-needs-unity-not-war-money-men-blazers/) (http://www.dai-sport.com/gareth-daviess-wru-reforms-must-mean-one-thing-leads-another/), it was interesting to receive news this week of considerable progress at the last WRU board meeting.
Olympic Sevens specialist Jaz Joyce will return for Wales Women this Sunday when they face Italy at the Principality Stadium. Wing Joyce and scrum-half Keira Bevan and are involved for the first time in this year’s Six Nations tournament. Bevan returns from an ankle injury suffered on international duty during the autumn, while Joyce has been involved in Sevens preparations for next month’s Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Italy are reportedly unimpressed by Warren Gatland’s “disrespectful” decision to make 10 changes to the Wales team for Sunday’s Six Nations match. Robin Davey is not enamoured, either, but for different reasons. Warren Gatland’s latest Wales line-up raises more questions than it provides answers as the build-up to the World Cup gathers pace. Sure, Italy at the Principality Stadium on Sunday may be the right game to experiment, consider options, try out new combinations and establish some depth.
Her teammates want to erect a statue to her, but Stef Collins would rather every penny in basketball is wisely spent protecting a sport in financial crisis. Tom Guntrip talks to the Cardiff Met Archers player, good enough to have won 139 Great Britain caps and respected enough to already have a seat on the sport’s board of directors. In the corner of a small café, in the corner of a small university campus, in the corner of Cardiff, Stef Collins sips her coffee. Stef has spent her life in various corners, but she refuses to be put in one.
There really is a genuine romance that surrounds the Welsh Cup, and already this year it’s written us a handful of stories. None more so than this season’s quarter-final stage. Penydarren’s attempt of sparking one of the Cup’s biggest upsets of all time when they visited Bangor City last weekend, and Connah’s Quay eliminating favourites […]
