The 2018/19 JD Welsh Premier League season kicks off on Friday night – and Dai Sport’s Matthew Burgess will bring you his first preview feature of the season on Thursday. The 27th season of the JDWPL welcomes back two names synonymous with Welsh football, as Caernarfon Town and Llanelli Town return to the top flight after a number of years out. Both clubs are rooted in the heart of their respective communities and will be hoping for great support as they kick off their campaigns at home to Cefn Druids and Connah’s Quay Nomads respectively.

Shaun Edwards will see out the remainder of his Wales contract to next year’s World Cup, before he returns to rugby league to take charge at Wigan Warriors. After months of speculation linking the Wales defence coach with various jobs in both codes, Wigan have confirmed he will be joining them next year. But the former Warriors star – who has spent a decade as right-hand man to Warren Gatland – will not be released before his time is up.

Welsh athlete Ieuan Thomas has spoken of his disappointment after missing out on a place in the European Championships 3,000m steeplechase final in Berlin on Tuesday morning. The Cardiff AAC man finished 10th in his heat in a time of 8:40.87, which wasn’t quick enough to give him a fastest qualifiers’ route to the final. Thomas, who has been in excellent form this season, felt he was in the “personal best shape” leading up to championships.

The Dragons have suffered a double injury blow to Harrison Keddie and Aaron Jarvis on the eve of the new season. Both forwards have been ruled out until at least October, having undergone surgery for identical injuries to their bicep muscles picked up in training. The absence of both players from the opening weeks of the Guinness Pro14 campaign – and most likely the opening weeks of European competition – will be a significant blow to Dragons head coach Bernard Jackman.
