Matthew Hudson-Smith is hunting down Thomas’ 1997 mark of 44.36 sec as he chases European gold in Berlin this week and the Welsh star expects him to leave Germany with not only the gold medal, but also his British record and his European championship best of 44.52 sec he set in winning the title in Budapest in 1998. The 23-year-old Hudson-Smith arrived in Berlin as the fastest European in the event this year (44.63 sec) and underlined his title credentials by winning his semi-final heat in 44.76 sec on Wedesday to go into Friday night’s final as the fastest qualifier.

Swansea City’s deadline day dealings left them with cash in the bank, an old boy from Cardiff City – but desperately short of central defenders. The Swans made just one signing, taking Wales international full-back Declan John from Rangers for an undisclosed fee. But four players left the club – three of them first team regulars from last season in Jordan Ayew, Federico Fernandez and Sam Clucas.

Geraint Thomas has agreed to sign a new deal to stay at Team Sky. Jayne Ludlow has been rewarded for transforming the fortunes of the Wales women’s team by being handed a new four-year deal. Ludlow – who has taken Wales to the brink of World Cup qualification – has agreed an extension to her current contract. It means she will have been in charge for seven years if she sees the agreement through to 2022.

The South Wales Warriors have advanced to semi-final of the British American Football league play-offs after their first round opponents cried off. The Worcestershire Black Knights, who the Warriors defeated 48-0 twice in divisional play this season, were due to travel to Llanharan for the first play-off round on Sunday to face the number one ranked Welshmen. But the Midlands side announced, via its Facebook page, it was unable to fulfill the fixture due to a player shortage.
