Bragging rights will be up for grabs at the Arms Park tonight (October 3) when Cardiff Met and Cardiff Univeristy go head-to-head in the BUCS Super Rugby tournament. Cardiff University couldn’t have asked for a tougher start to their first season in the top flight of student rugby. They kicked-off their Super Rugby career with a home clash with reigning champions Hartpury last week, going down 31-14, and meet last season’s runners-up in round two.

The summer is over and Glamorgan are left to reflect on the third worst season in the county’s history. Alun Rhys Chivers says the county’s awards night just about merited a winner, but lessons of the past must be learned if more embarrassment is to be avoided in the future. Awards dinners held by Glamorgan County Cricket Club in Cardiff and the St. Helen’s Balconiers in Swansea signify the end of the cricket season; occasions to reflect, as well as to celebrate and reward those who have excelled with willow and leather on the field. While there has been little to celebrate this season in terms of team performances, the St. Helen’s Balconiers Awards on October 1 offered an opportunity to mark, amongst other things, 25 years since Glamorgan’s triumph in winning the Sunday League title, one of the county’s major achievements in its 130-year history.

US-based athlete Rosie Edwards is raring go in the red of Wales as she makes her international debut at Sunday’s inaugural Commonwealth Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff. Edwards, who spent part of her formative years in Llanelli, has been based on the other side of The Pond since heading to university in Indianapolis eight years ago. But she is thrilled at the prospect of joining up with the rest of the Welsh team on the streets of the capital, particularly after her season was threatened by serious injury.

Graham Potter insisted he was happy to escape from the “bedlam” of a goalless draw at Wigan with a point that lifted Swansea City into the Championship play-off places. The Swans manager watched his team spurn a number of opportunities to take all three points on Tuesday night and claim a victory which would have put them within one win of the top two. It was 27 years ago this month that the Apollo landing reverberated around Cardiff. It was the World Cup, it was Wales’ first game, and it was meant to be a comfortable start to the tournament. Peter Jackson recalls how a Samoan player, guided by an All Blacks legend, knocked the stuffing out of Wales and then did it all again eight years later. The merest mention of his name still evokes memories of the lunar landing as well as a result that put Samoa over the moon and Wales under the blackest of clouds. Johnny Hopkins will get the chance to double up on his Commonwealth dreams when he dons the red vest of Wales once again on Sunday to compete in the Cardiff University / Commonwealth Half Marathon Championships. The 26-year-old Swansea Harrier made his Commonwealth Games debut at Gold Coast earlier in the year when he finished sixth in the 3000 steeplechase final to come home as the first Briton.

Oli McBurnie will try and leave Wigan badly burned on Tuesday night to prove he’s the striker on fire, rather than Will Grigg. The two marksmen are set to meet at the DW Stadium, where it will be a shoot-out between the clubs seventh and eighth in the Championship table. The Swans are one place above their opponents and will be hopeful that McBurnie can ignite his team more than the Northern Irishman Grigg, who gave rise to his country’s memorable fans’ song at Euro 2016.

Wales have made a late change to their women’s team for Sunday’s inaugural Commonwealth Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff. Pembrokeshire-based Caryl Jones, who represented Wales at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April and Great Britain at August’s European Championships, has been forced to withdraw due to injury.

After a pretty torrid season so far in the FIA World Rally Championship, winning his home Dayinsure Wales Rally GB for a second time in a row would be the perfect tonic for Elfyn Evans – although, by his own admission, it’s not going to be easy. Twelve months ago, Evans was the coolest man in Wales as he guided his M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC to a comfortable maiden WRC victory. 2018 promised so much. As team-mate to five-time world champion Sébastien Ogier, Evans relished the chance to compare himself directly with the world’s best in the same car. And he has – except it’s usually been under Rally 2 comeback rules, after early punctures, problems and mishaps have ruined any chance of victory.

Oli McBurnie is back in the Scotland squad and could be facing Cristiano Ronaldo later this month – but Cardiff City’s Callum Paterson has been left out. Swansea City striker McBurnie was forced to pull out of last month’s matches through injury, but his four goals for the Swans in the Championship to date this season have kept him very much uppermost in the mind of Scotland manager Alex McLeish. The Scots currently top their group in the new Nations League campaign and are due to meet Ronaldo’s Portuguese side, the reigning European champions, in a friendly in Glasgow on 14 October.
