Wales’ first closed road stage rally will take place on Sunday 8 September, after the Get Connected Rali Bae Ceredigion was officially unveiled. Four motor clubs – Newtown and District Automobile Club, Aberystwyth and District Motor Club, Lampeter and District Motor Club and Teifi Valley Motor Club – have come together to organise this brand new landmark event. The rally route has been carefully chosen to provide a selection of top quality asphalt roads that, because of their character, are enjoyable yet challenging to drive. Besides using a selection of roads that will greatly appeal to competitors, organisers have planned a route that will showcase the stunning natural beauty of the area. Care has also been taken to ensure that the road closures cause minimal disruption to local residents, businesses and other road users.
Stage rally star Osian Pryce contested his first road event last night, finishing sixth overall and third expert in a Ford Escort Mk2 on the Border View Tiles Border 100 Road Rally. The Welsh Border Car Club organised event contained a 110 mile route on maps 125, 126 and 136, which started from Llanfyllin High School and finished at the rugby club in Meifod. The event was won by Gary Roberts/Darren Ikin in a Peugeot 205. Lewis Morgan – who was co-driven by Max Freeman, who had come directly from the Rallynuts Stages Rally – finished second in a Ford Escort, while Iwan Jones/Neil Spiers (Ford Escort) were third.
Scottish rally driver Euan Thorburn set fastest time on all six stages to win the Mid-Wales based Rallynuts Stages Rally by 59 seconds in his Ford Focus WRC. It was a successful event for Welsh co-drivers, with four finishing in the top seven – namely Dai Roberts (second), Carl Williamson (fifth), Patrick Walsh (sixth) and Gareth Parry (seventh). Over 130 crews took part in the event, which started and finished in the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd and contained 44 miles of competitive driving in the dry and dusty forests of Hafren, Sweet Lamb and Coed Sarnau.
Former Cardiff Devils power forward Ivan Matulik has reminded Welsh ice hockey fans of a Superleague season two decades ago. He reckons Andrew Lord’s Devils could repeat a feat achieved by the 1998-99 team when Paul Heavey was coach. Devils had finished League runners-up, behind favourites Manchester Storm and the rivals clashed in the play-offs […]
Wayne Pivac looks likely to be working alongside both Shaun Edwards and Byron Hayward with Wales next season. The Scarlets head coach – who takes over from Warren Gatland after the World Cup – appears to have persuaded the Welsh Rugby Union to employ both defence coaches in his management team. Hayward’s departure from the Scarlets has been confirmed, while Edwards’ distancing himself from job offers with Wigan and Wasps – as reported by Dai Sport at the start of the week – seems to have paid off.
Neil Warnock believes his Cardiff City team have reached the point of no return and that if they lose at Brighton on Tuesday they will be heading for relegation. That is not to say Warnock thinks the fight has left his squad – far from it – but with games fast running out and the five point gap between themselves and safety still there, realism has come to the fore. “From their point of view it’s probably all over if they beat us,” admitted Warnock after the club’s latest controversial defeat, a 2-0 loss at Burnley.
Matt Grimes admitted Swansea City were too naive as their away day blues ended their slim chances of snatching a play-offs spot. The Swans were unable to recover after a three goal blitz inside the first 17 minutes by managerless QPR.

Welsh golfer James Ashfield was crowned 2019 Scottish Boys’ Open Champion after a dramatic finish on the links at West Kilbride. The Delamere Forest player won by two shots after coming from behind to finish on seven-under-par, posting rounds of 69, 69, 69 and 70.
Sean Dyche will not relax even if Burnley beat Cardiff City today, with his side still precariously placed in the Premier League. What had looked a potential shoot-out for survival now appears a chance for the Clarets to secure their top-flight status after back-to-back wins over Wolves and Bournemouth. That moved Burnley eight points ahead of the Bluebirds in the final relegation spot, and victory would extend the gap to 11 with only five games left for Neil Warnock’s side.
Allen Clarke believes his resurgent Ospreys have rediscovered their swagger as they get ready for a European showdown against the Cardiff Blues. The Judgment Day clash at the Principality Stadium on April 27 is the Ospreys’ final game of the regular season. It will certainly have something riding on it – either a route into next season’s Heineken European Cup directly, or through a play-off, and possibly a Guinness Pro 14 knockout spot, depending on other results.
Lorcan Williams, who hails from West Wales, had four rides for legendary trainer Paul Nicholls at Fontwell and won on three of them (writes Brian Lee). After finishing a length runner-up on the top weighted Tomorrow Mystery to Magical Thomas in the opening Handicap Hurdle, the former point-to-point rider won the next three races at […]
Tesni Evans will face reigning World Champion Nour El Sherbini as she bids for a place in the semi-finals of the DPD Open in Holland. The 26-year-old admitted she had to dig deep to see off Mariam Metwally to set up the quarter-final clash in Eindhoven.
Neil Warnock is in hot water with the FA for suggesting their referees are biased, rather than just incompetent. The Cardiff City manager has been charged by the Football Association following post-match comments made after Cardiff’s defeat to Chelsea. But it is understood the claims by Warnock that the Premier League have the “worst officials in the world” are not those over which he could be punished.

The cyclist described as the “politest man in the peloton” is hoping to force his way to the front of the queue and grab himself a place at one of this season’s Grand Tours. Carmarthen’s Scott Davies, who was the top British rider at last year’s Tour of Britain, outlined his ambitions in a disarmingly honest interview for his Dimension Data team.
Bob Fowden will return to rallying on this weekend’s Altratech SMC Stages at Anglesey Circuit, almost a year after his last appearance during which a fire badly damaged his Comline Auto Parts/NGK-backed Subaru Impreza WRC S11. The Llanelli driver was lucky to escape unharmed from a blaze on last May’s Manx National Rally, although the engine bay and wiring loom were incinerated. But what took seconds to destroy has taken months to repair – and after much hard work and expense, Fowden’s ex-Petter Solberg car is as good as new and ready to go. Co-driven by his eldest son Paul, Fowden has been seeded at number one for this Sunday’s event.
