Ioan Lloyd rolled his West Wales Rally Spares-backed Citroen C1 on last weekend’s Altratech SMC Stages at Anglesey Circuit – but he continued at unabated speed to finish 13th in the Formula 1000 Junior Rally Championship category. Having won the previous DCC Ingliston Stages Rally, the Llandysul teenager started the SMC Stages well by setting joint fastest time on the opening stage. But it all went slightly wrong on SS3, when he and co-driver Jonathan Jackson tipped the car onto its roof.

Rain-hit Monza provided the venue for an unbelievably frustrating start to the 2019 Blancpain Endurance Cup for Bentley Continental racer Seb Morris over the weekend, when a luckless early-race incident involving team-mate Derek Pierce led to a vexing retirement. Everything had started superbly for 23-year old Morris and Team Parker Racing during practice at the Italian track, the Wrexham-born driver lapping third quickest in the Pro-Am class on Saturday morning, fifth overall, and notably out-pacing the two ‘factory’ Bentley entries. With confidence high for the 90-minute Pre-Qualifying session later in the day, BRDC Superstar and Motorsport UK ‘Team UK’ driver Morris continued his sensational level of performance with third fastest in class again, only a couple of tenths of a second shy of the Pro-Am pace.
Gareth Anscombe has been hailed as bringing the “X-factor” to the Ospreys as Sam Davies prepares to make room at the region by leaving for the Scarlets. Anscombe’s decision to leave the Cardiff Blues for their regional rivals – a prospect dismissed by Blues coach John Mulvihill just a week ago – will spark a re-shuffle among the No.10s in Wales. Bob Fowden’s return to rallying after almost a year out of the sport ended in mixed fortunes on the Altratech SMC Stages at Anglesey Circuit yesterday. The Llanelli driver started well, setting joint fastest times on the opening two stages in his Comline Auto Parts/NGK-backed Subaru Impreza WRC S11 – in what was the ex-Petter Solberg machine’s first appearance since a fire on the Manx National Rally last May forced a major rebuild. However, when the car started to smoke on stage three, Fowden and his co-driving son Paul quickly pulled the Subaru off to the side of the road. Initial investigations suggest that the smoke was caused by an errant oil seal on the brand new turbo allowing oil to leak onto the hot engine – nothing too serious, if not a little worrying at the time.
Neil Warnock has urged his Cardiff City players to prove there is room for another great sporting comeback story this week. The Bluebirds manager says he has been inspired by Tiger Woods’ triumph at the Masters where the 43-year-old won his first major tournament for 11 years. Cardiff are even longer odds to stay up – 11-1 with some bookies – than Woods was to win another green jacket at Augusta, but Warnock insists the revival can start with a victory at Brighton on Tuesday night.
