Sportscar racer Seb Morris says that he is “ultra-confident” ahead of this weekend’s Blancpain Endurance Cup race meeting at Silverstone, as he contests his home round of the international series in a powerful Bentley Continental GT3. At the opening round of the 2019 series at Monza, the 23-year old Wrexham-born driver out-performed the ‘works’ Bentley entries in pre-event practice in the Team Parker Racing-run car. He also lapped the famous Italian track third in Pro-Am and fifth overall, before things dramatically unravelled through no fault of his own. Two unfortunate incidents, one for team-mate Rob Smith in qualifying and the second for Derek Pierce in the opening hour of the Monza race, meant that Morris, a BRDC Superstar and Motorsport UK Team UK driver, didn’t get to qualify for, or participate in, the three-hour race.
Shaun Edwards appears to heading to France after rejecting a Wales contract offer to stay on as defence coach after the World Cup. Peter Jackson says he should go with no regrets and no recriminations from his employers, either. One morning in early August last year, hot on the heels of Wales confirming Wayne Pivac as their head coach post-Japan, Shaun Edwards addressed the subject of his next move. An announcement was imminent. He didn’t say where he would be going but he did say something which in view of more recent events sounds even more significant now than it did then.
Competitors in the 2019 Pirelli Motorsport UK Welsh Forest Rally Championship reach the halfway point in the series this Saturday (11 May) when they take on the 53rd running of the Plains Rally, organised by Knutsford and District Motor Club. Two of the youngest drivers in the Championship currently share the overall series lead – 2018 junior champion Matthew Hirst (who took his first outright rally win on the second event of the series, the North Wales Rally) in his Mitsubishi Evo VI and 18-year old Tom Llewellin in his less powerful historic spec Ford Escort Mk2. Llewellin also leads the strongly supported two-wheel drive class (followed by Chris Powell and Hywel Davies), the junior driver category (from Gethin Price and Zak Hughes) and the Ravenol Welsh Challenge (with Hywel Davies second and Josh Taylor third).
Three Welsh players have qualified for the Rhiwbina PSA Welsh Open Squash quarter-finals. Peter Creed, who plays out of the host club, Emyr Evans and Owain Taylor are in the last eight along with Welsh Wizards’ player Edmon Lopez. The $11,000 Challenger 10 tournament, featuring a number of players ranked among the World’s top 100, […]
Jamille Matt intends to repay the faith shown in him by Michael Flynn tonight – by exceeding his manager’s expectations. Forget their FA Cup run for a moment, and its fleeting impact, the 20-goal County striker will lead the line for his team in their biggest game of the season when he lines up against Mansfield, the Stags, at a packed Rodney Parade. But the first leg of the League Two play-offs will also prove an opportunity for Matt to repay, with interest, the confidence shown in him by Flynn.
Veteran rider Byron Moorcroft of Cowbridge seems to be riding better than ever, writes Brian Lee. He chalked up the 24th winner this season at the well attended Banwen Point-To-Point Club Steeplechases.. Moorcroft was riding Jason Warner’s five-year-old chestnut gelding French Piece, which scored by three lengths from Gowell after making most of the running. […]
Welshman Joey Lewis is fired up for Great Britain’s opening World Championship ice hockey match on Saturday. Newport-born Lewis, who came through the Cardiff Devils youth development system and plays in DEL2 ESV Kaufbeuren, is in Slovakia with the GB squad preparing for their opening match against Germany. And it’s this game the 26-year-old, who hails […]
Ben Davies will become only the sixth Welshman to play in a European Cup final thanks to Tottenham’s incredible Champions League comeback win over Ajax. The Wales defender – who came on to the field in Amsterdam in the 82nd minute on Wednesday night – was part of the Spurs team that earned an incredible 3-2 victory to draw the tie 3-3 on aggregate and go through to the final on away goals. Spurs were level at 2-2 when Davies came on, but their epic comeback from 2-0 down on the night, and 3-0 overall, was sealed when Lucas Moura clinched his hat-trick in the 96th minute of an astonishing semi-final.
Welsh players Owain Taylor and Elliott Morris Devred were winners on the opening day of Rhiwbina SRC’s $11,000 PSA Welsh Open. University of Nottingham student Taylor took 69 minutes to upset Nick Wall in four games, while wildcard Morris Devred from Cardif SRC defeated Syed Ali Bukhari, also in four games.
Merthyr may appear to be strolling towards a hat-trick of Principality Premiership titles but Cardiff and Pontypridd still believe they can trip them up. The chasing pair both have to win tonight and then hope the Ironmen lose in order to still have a chance of overtaking them at the top of the table. Cardiff followed up their WRU National Cup victory over the Ironmen with an 11 try annihilation of Ebbw Vale last weekend and will have more of the same in mind as they bring to a close the best season at the Arms Park in a decade when they welcome bottom of the table Neath.
Andy Davies has re-taken the Group N class lead in the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship after dominating the category and finishing a magnificent ninth overall on the International Rally of the Lakes. The 31-year old reigning Welsh Road Rally champion from Aberystwyth took the Group N lead on the famous Killarney-based event after a stunning drive through the Ardgroom stage (SS2) in his GAP solutions-backed Subaru Impreza. Davies had extended his advantage to 41 seconds by the start of the final day, and with the majority of the event still remaining, it was to prove a mentally demanding drive to the finish – driving hard to maintain position, whilst keeping risks to a minimum.
Michael Flynn will try and exude the Germanic calm and certainty of Jurgen Klopp when Newport County begin their play-off quest tomorrow night. Flynn – a lifelong Liverpool fan – is feeling inspired by the club’s incredible 4-3 aggregate victory over Barcelona on Tuesday night that took that took them into the final of the Champions League. It was a night of pulsating drama, passion and relentless energy but Flynn has an insider’s view of the Anfield methods thanks to his visit to the Premier League club in March.
A double figure number of new sailors gave the sport a try at the first Push The Boat Out session at Llandegfedd, a great start with more opportunities to come in May. Feedback from those taking advantage of the opportunity to try sailing was very positive, with almost half looking to follow up training or membership opportunities.

Colwyn Bay will host a spectacular two-mile special stage on this year’s Wales Rally GB (3-6 October), with chicanes, donuts and a hairpin corner set out along the seaside town’s multi-million pound redeveloped Promenade. This news extends the FIA World Rally Championship event’s presence in County Conwy following confirmation that the Rally HQ and central Service Park are moving into the heart of Llandudno. It also comes ahead of this weekend’s Prom Xtra family event in Colwyn Bay at which Wales Rally GB will have a significant presence. October’s spectacular new Colwyn Bay speed test is scheduled for prime time on early Saturday evening (5 October) to maximise its appeal and will be the headline of a packed programme of car-themed activities and entertainment.
Neil Warnock has received a thumbs up from Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan to remain as the club’s manager despite relegation from the Premier League. The Bluebirds manager had previously insisted he wanted to see out the final year of his contract, but appeared to be wavering at the weekend when he claimed he had “no idea” about his future and would be having talks with Tan and chairman Mehmet Dalman. Warnock seemed to question his own future after Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace confirmed Cardiff’s return to the Sky Bet Championship, with the 70-year-old saying he would manager for a one further year, but could not say where that would be.
Osian Pryce says that his co-driver Dale Furniss will be a force to be reckoned with when he contested this weekend’s Manx National Rally – driving a road-rally spec Volkswagen Golf GTI. The 30-year old navigator from Llanfyllin has contested a number of night events as a driver. However, his only previous stage rally as a driver was the recent Ormco Jurby Stages, in which he finished the Isle of Man airfield event in an impressive third overall and first two-wheel drive car. Furniss says that contesting the Manx National as a driver is a dream come true, although it will be by far his biggest challenge behind the steering wheel. He’ll be co-driven by 18-year North Wales navigator Sion Williams.
This weekend’s Rally Chile might be a brand new event for the FIA World Rally Championship, but Elfyn Evans reckons the stages are not too dissimilar to Wales Rally GB, as he aims to get his title bid back on track after crashing out in neighbouring Argentina. The break between the two South American rounds was never going to be a holiday for the M-Sport team, although the mechanics had more work than they’d hoped for when they had to rebuild Evans’ EcoBoost-powered Ford Fiesta WRC, after it hit a massive boulder and rolled out of Rally Argentina. Chile, the 32nd country to host a round of the WRC, will be a level playing field for competitors, as everyone will have the same amount of experience of the event – zero!
Slow and steady wins the race isn’t a phrase normally associated with athletics – a sport where speed is key. However, when you are nurturing a prodigious young talent, the patient approach is a winning formula. Rising Welsh middle-distance star Jake Heyward has been earmarked for success from a young age. But too many athletes have burned too brightly early on in their careers only to see their potential extinguished too soon.
