Heather And Bethan Looking To Walk Their Way Into GB Worlds Team

Warriors To Renew Severnside Rivalry

Local rivalries can usually be counted on to add spice to any sport and this Sunday a Severnside derby will be reintroduced to the British American Football League. The South Wales Warriors will cross the Severn Bridge to face the Apache in competitive action for the first time since the Bristol side entered the league in 2011. Like trains passing through the Severn tunnel the pair missed each other in 2018. The Warriors started their first season back in the bottom tier in seven years as the Apache found themselves in Division One having won promotion from Division Two in 2017.

Gerwyn Price opened the night with an 8-3 victory over Peter Wright but his hopes of reaching next week’s play-offs at the O2 were later ended by Daryl Gurney. Victory saw the Welshman momentarily jump above Gurney and Mensur Suljovic onto 18 points but recognised a win for one or the other would see him miss out.

Now, another Wales star is set to join the Flint fighter on the global stage when Lauren Williams bids to be crowned World Champion in the -67Kg category in Manchester this week. While Jones will be aiming to claim the one major medal missing from her collection, Williams will be battling to make it double gold for GB Taekwondo and underline her status as a major contender for the Tokyo Olympics next year.

Swansea Uni’s Hayley Baker Is GB Coaching Pick

Swansea University’s Hayley Baker will coach the Great Britain swimming team at this year’s World University Summer Games in Naples. The 39-year-old was selected from a talented pool of coaches at universities across Britain for this summer’s event, which takes place from 3-14 July. Originally from the north west of England, Baker arrived in Swansea in 2007 after a spell as head coach at Bolton Metro. She took up a position as coach at Swansea Aquatics, before eventually becoming head coach of Swansea University’s swimming programme last year.

Young Ioan Lloyd scored a convincing Formula 1000 Junior Rally Championship win on the Melbourne Junior Rally at the weekend to move up to fourth in the points table – just four points off second place. Having rolled his Citroen C1 last time out on the Altratech SMC Stages at Anglesey Circuit, a rapid turnaround by West Wales Rally Spares and Rick’s Bodyshop saw the car repaired in time for the next event. And their hard work was rewarded when the Llandysul teenager drove brilliantly to win comfortably at the recent round of the series, which was held at Melbourne Airfield in East Yorkshire.
