The Welsh Sports Association – the organisation representing the governing bodies of sports in Wales – have appointed Lynn Pamment as their new independent chair. A senior partner at accountancy and audit specialists PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Pamment replaces Helen Humphrey, who is stepping down after three years, and says she wants to help promote active lifestyles in Wales.
The Historic Sports Car Club’s inaugural race meeting at the spectacular Anglesey Circuit in North Wales last weekend delivered a fabulous weekend of racing as drivers loved the track and its coastal setting. The first Tom Pryce Memorial Meeting featured 20 races, a total entry of more than 170 cars and a very special tribute to the life of Welsh racing driver Tom Pryce. The weekend also included the first stand-alone races for Formula Atlantic since the 1980s and the whole event was run in warm and sunny conditions. As well as racing, many competitors took time out to enjoy the beaches of Anglesey and the whole weekend ran in a wonderful holiday atmosphere. Such was the overwhelmingly positive response from competitors that the Club is already planning to return.

Cardiff sprinter Sam Gordon produced the fastest Welsh 100m time in history on day two of the Welsh Athletics Championships. In the last event of the day, Gordon blasted to a wind-assisted time of 10.08 seconds to claim the Welsh title. Unfortunately, the following wind means that the time won’t go down in the records books. Had it been legal it would have been a new Welsh record.
Swansea Harrier Joe Brier helped the Great Britain 4x400m relay squad to a silver medal at the European Under-23 Championships in Sweden on Sunday night. Brier ran the third leg as GB came home in second place behind Germany, clocking a time of 3:04.59 which helped the team end the championships with a medal tally of 14. The silver medal adds to the bronze won by Brier in the 4x400m final at last year’s World Junior Championships in Finland.

Four Welsh swimmers are off to South Korea for the World Aquatics Championships, which begin in just over a week’s time. One of those, Alys Thomas, spoke to Liz Byrnes about living up to her new reputation following last year’s stunning Commonwealth Games success. When Alys Thomas won the 200m butterfly title at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, not only was it cause for celebration in Wales but the manner of her victory also sent a shudder across pool decks around the world. Thomas won in 2:05.45, a new Games record, and one that would have locked her out of the medals by just one place and 0.25secs at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Liam Williams is hoping to strike silver before graduating to gold at the O2 Arena tonight when he takes on the former European middleweight champion Karim Achour. At stake for the 27-year-old Welshman and his French rival will be the WBC silver middleweight crown and a spot in the top five of their rankings. What Williams wants is a shot at the gold standard world title in the not too distant future. “For me it is all about picking up the title and taking another step in the right direction towards the ultimate goal, which is obviously becoming world champion,” said Williams.

A bumper 130-car field are beginning to arrive in Builth Wells for tomorrow’s Nicky Grist Stages, with Tom Llewellin looking to extend his lead in the Pirelli Motorsport UK Welsh Forest Rally Championship. Driving an Historic-spec Escort Mk2, the Pembrokeshire teenager and son of double British Rally Champion Dai Llewellin not only leads the overall drivers’ standings but the Junior series, the two-wheel drive category and the RAVENOL Welsh Challenge as well. Co-driven by Russ Whittock, Llewellin also leads the FMP Rally Challenge, which has over 100 competitors and helps raise awareness of the Wales Air Ambulance.
There are some mouth-watering head-to-heads on the cards at this weekend’s Welsh Senior Track and Field Championships in Cardiff. On the track, Great Britain team-mates and Wales Commonwealth Games competitors Heather Lewis and Bethan Davies will showdown for the Welsh 5K race walk crown. Pembrokeshire athlete Lewis has had the upper hand so far this season having broken her personal best over 20K three times already and claimed the British Athletics Grand Prix title.
Evan Hoyt’s Wimbledon adventure ended with a quarter-final defeat – but praise from two-time champion Andy Murray. The 24-year-old from Llanelli had enjoyed a dream debut at the tournament, but his remarkable mixed doubles run with partner Eden Silva came to a gallant end in the quarter finals on Thursday evening. The British duo, making their Wimbledon debuts, finally met their match in the shape of established pairing Ivan Dodig, of Croatia, and Taiwan’s Latisha Chan, going down 7-5, 7-6.
Cardiff’s Jake Heyward ran a superb tactical race to book his place in Saturday night’s 1500m final at the European Under-23 Athletics Championships in Sweden. Heyward, who came into the championships short on race time due to injury, eased into the final by winning the second of two heats in Gavle.
Geraint Thomas answered any doubts over his form for the Tour de France with a storming finish on stage six. The defending champ was fourth on the stage to move up two places to fifth overall and leapfrog Team Ineos team-mate Egan Bernal. Thomas finished ahead of all the main contenders for the Yellow Jersey on the strength-sapping finish to the 160.5km stage as the race hit the mountains for the first time.
