If you want the “perfect” assessment of the challenge Warren Gatland’s Wales team will face from Fiji at the World Cup, then it has been given by double tournament winner John Eales. The Aussie legend was in Tokyo last weekend to see the South Seas side go down 34-21 to host nation Japan but was suitably impressed by what he saw from the Pool D rivals to his own country and Wales. Few Wales fans will need reminding that 12 years ago in France, it was Fiji that bundled Gareth Jenkins’ team out of the tournament – a result that proved the end for the coach and precipitated the arrival of Gatland.

Seb Morris’ dream of racing in the prestigious 24 Hours of Spa as a works driver quickly turned into a nightmare, as the Bentley Continental GT3 he was waiting to pilot suffered engine failure 20 minutes into the race. It had started pretty well, with the 23-year old Wrexham-born driver qualifying as the fourth fastest of the 16 works Bentley pilots taking part in the fourth round of the Blancpain Endurance Cup in Belgium. But just six laps into the race, team-mate Callum MacLeod radioed into the pits to report that the car had a developing engine problem. Unbelievably, the issue was terminal and meant that the Bentley had to be retired from the race.

The chances of Gareth Bale’s stalled move to China being revived look over after Jiangsu Suning announced they have signed Croatian striker Ivan Santini. Bale was reported to be close to moving to the Chinese Super League club, but the deal collapsed over the weekend. Some reports in Spain claimed Real Madrid could not agree a fee with the Chinese club, while others suggested Bale himself rejected the supposed £1 million-a-week contract for family reasons.

Thomas finished this year’s tour in second place on Sunday, behind teammate Egan Bernal, a year after becoming the first Welshman to win cycling’s greatest race. The Cardiff rider conceded some disappointment at handing over his title, but his runners-up spot is by some distance the second-best placing at any grand tour event in his entire career.

Geraint Thomas admitted he will be disappointed not to win back-to-back Tour de France victories, but insists it’s a healthy rivalry between himself and prospective new champion Egan Bernal. The defending champion will finish second when the tour finishes in Paris tomorrow – one place behind Bernal, his Team Ineos co-leader. As hard luck stories go, Graeme Thomas has got a belter to tell his grandchildren. Having worked so hard to achieve his dream of becoming an Olympian, the Welsh rower went all the way to Rio with Team GB in 2016 only to be struck down by a mystery, flu-like virus after arriving in Brazil. Although he recovered pretty quickly the selectors took the decision not to risk his fitness and at the 11th hour they called-up Jack Beaumont to replace him. He didn’t even get out on the water with his British quadruple scull team mates and was sent home on the next available flight.
Gareth Bale will put Chinese football on a new level if he decides to take up the reported £1m-a-week deal from Jiangsu Suning – although he could also end up playing in Italy for Inter Milan. Reports in Spain on Friday night said the Wales star was in advanced talks to leave Real Madrid for around £50m after six years and head for the Far East and the Chinese Super League. Real manager Zinedine Zidane said last weekend he thought it would be “best for everyone” if Bale’s departure could be arranged quickly — comments Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett branded “disrespectful” of a player who has helped his club to a Spanish league title and four Champions Leagues since arriving from Tottenham six years ago.
