Osian Roberts has stepped down as assistant coach of Wales to become technical director at the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. Roberts, who also leaves his position as technical director of the Football Association of Wales Trust, worked as assistant to Gary Speed, Chris Coleman and current national team boss Ryan Giggs. The 54-year-old was part of the backroom team which guided the Dragons to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 and was interviewed for the manager’s job prior to the appointment of Giggs in January 2018.

Bath have promised to do all they can to get Taulupe Faletau fit for club and country again as soon as possible. The Wales and Lions star – who has been ruled out of the World Cup in Japan after being dealt another cruel injury blow – is not expected to play again for three to four months after suffering a collarbone injury in training. It means he will miss the tournament in what is a huge blow to Wales as well as to a player desperate to overcome recent injury problems.

Rather like Boris Johnson’s strategy of suggesting simple optimism can somehow overcome complex problems, Swansea City fans are being asked to put hope ahead of reality again this season. As the club prepare for their second campaign in the Championship, it is difficult to find many concrete reasons to believe they will end it by returning to the Premier League. Instead, the chosen path of the American owners seems to reflect that of the new Prime Minister – or perhaps Donald Trump – in hoping that a breezy confidence that everything will be just fine will in itself overcome any difficulties.

Welsh cyclists will make up 50 per cent of the Great Britain team at the UCI Junior Track World Championships in Germany later this month. The six-strong Welsh contingent in the GB squad follows some outstanding performance at the recent European Junior and  Under-23 Championships in Ghent.

Kirsty Taylor will captain the Great Britain team taking part in the World Para Athletics Junior Championships starting in Switzerland on Thursday. The Caldicot sprinter, who will be making her debut in a GB vest, is certainly taking the responsibilities of the role seriously as she has already been dubbed “mum” by members of the 15-strong team. Six Welsh players have been named in the Great Britain women’s Aussie Rules squad to compete at the European Championships later this year. The healthy contingent reflects the progress made by Wales – called the Welsh Wyverns – in the women’s game following their recent sixth-placed finish at the Euro Cup in Sweden. Two places in the 28-strong GB squad – known as the Swans – have been left open and could yet by filled by Welsh players.

Owain Lloyd-Hughes is the latest young Welsh sprinter to catch the eye of Great Britain’s athletics selectors. The Neath youngster is one of four Welsh athletes named in the GB Under-20 squad to compete at the Manchester International on August 15. Lloyd-Hughes is joined by James Tomlinson and Remi Adebiyi, who both won GB vests at the recent Under-20 European Championships in Sweden and Tom Hewson, who last week learned of his first senior GB call up.

The New Saints require nothing less than a momentous comeback in the latest chapter of their summer 2019 European campaign, as they seek to overturn a first-leg deficit against FC Copenhagen tonight (6.45pm). Swansea City have agreed to sell top scorer Oli McBurnie to Sheffield United for a fee that could be worth £20m. Swansea City goalkeepers Kristoffer Nordfeldt and Erwin Mulder have been told the slate has been wiped clean and the shirt is up for grabs as they start the new season.
