Cardiff Athletics have secured a highly respectable fourth place finish in their first season back in the UK Women’s Athletics League. Up against some of the powerhouses of British women’s athletics, the Cardiff team gained a mid-table finish after placing fourth in the final match of the season in Birmingham on Saturday. They finished just half a league point behind third placed Trafford AC and above the likes of the mighty Birchfield Harriers who finished sixth in the eight-team top flight. Thames Valley Harriers were crowned champions.
Cory Hill has welcomed Wales’ demanding World Cup warm-up programme and predicted they will be “flat-out” Test matches. Wales play England and Ireland home and away in the next month, starting with a trip to Twickenham on Sunday. It is a testing schedule which has raised eyebrows in some quarters, and Wales coach Warren Gatland hopes history does not repeat itself with key players lost to injury.
Colwyn Bay’s defeat to Gresford in the Nathaniel MG Cup yesterday marked an unwanted start to life back in the Welsh system. After a late second-half goal secured a win for hosts Gresford, the Seasiders could now face a three-week wait before their next competitive game. Jordan MacCarter’s header 12-minutes from time sent Gresford into next week’s second round tie with Bala Town, leaving Colwyn Bay with a two-week pause before their next competitive match, their league opener with Bangor City.
Borja Baston may have spent a thousand days between goals for Swansea City, but teammate Mike van der Hoorn reckons that strike rate is about to get a whole lot more respectable. Spanish striker Borja took precisely 1,022 days between his first goal for Swansea in October 2016 and his next – the equaliser in Saturday’s 2-1 opening Championship victory over Hull City. In fairness to the one-time record club signing – who cost £15.5m – he has been scoring goals in the last three years. Just not for Swansea and not very many, if truth be told.

Two new national records were set on Saturday as Welsh athletes hit top form at home and abroad. Competing at an international meeting in Portugal, hammer thrower Osian Jones broke his own senior Welsh record for the second time this season. Meanwhile, Cardiff Athletics youngster Ben Reynolds set a brilliant new Welsh 1500m Under-17 record at the British Athletics League Premiership match in Birmingham.
Great Britain captain Kirsty Taylor claimed a second silver medal on day two of the World Para Athletics Junior Championships in Switzerland. The Caldicot sprinter followed up her silver medal in the T44-64 200m by claiming the same colour medal in the T42-64 100m. Taylor placed second on Raza points, the method in Paralympic athletics for comparing times by athletes of differing levels of disability.
Daniel James has thanked his Manchester United teammates for guiding him through his transition at the club – but warned Chelsea that United are ready to start the season with a bang. The former Swansea City winger marked his return to Wales by scoring the winning penalty against AC Milan on Saturday night as the Italians were beaten 5-4 on penalties after being held to a 2-2 draw in the International Champions Cup. James came on as a substitute at a packed Principality Stadium before coolly slotting the spot kick that gave United their sixth successive pre-season victory.
A thousand days – the entire length of the Kennedy presidency – had elapsed since Borja Baston last scored for Swansea City, but manager Steve Cooper believes history moves on without so much as a backward glance. “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country,” declared John F. Kennedy at his inauguration. After scoring the equaliser in Swansea’s 2-1 opening Championship season victory at home to Hull City, it was case of Borja doing for his club, rather than them doing away with him as seemed to be the case for much of the summer.
Newport County 2, Mansfield Town 2 Michael Flynn was delighted with his team for most of Newport County’s home draw against promotion favourites Mansfield Town at Rodney Parade. “We were brilliant for 90 per cent of the match,” said manager Flynn. “We should have scored more goals. “We came out after half-time and knew they […]

The Dragons are at home against Barrow in their first Vanarama National League match and Lawlor, a midfield player or defender, says: “The gaffer (Bryan Hughes) has brought in new players and the idea is that they are […]

Team GB marathon man Josh Griffiths is aiming to continue his 10K winning streak at the ABP Barry Island 10K on Sunday. The Swansea Harrier is in pole position for the Healthspan Wales 10K title after racing to victory at the inaugural Healthspan Porthcawl 10K last month. Griffiths kicked on in the last kilometre to triumph in 29 minutes 54 seconds, and will be out to clock another sub-30 performance at another of South Wales’ iconic seaside locations.
Pepe Reina is planning more glory at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium as the former Liverpool and Spain goalkeeper prepares to return to the scene of one of the greatest moments of his career. In 2006 – at what was then the Millennium Stadium – Reina played an heroic role as his Liverpool side defeated West Ham 3-1 on penalties to win the FA Cup.
The Welsh sprinting charge continued at full throttle this week during the annual Belfast International meeting. Sam Gordon led the way as he continued his outstanding form to produce a brilliant performance in the men’s A 100m final on Thursday night. The Cardiff athlete, who recently ran a wind-assisted 10.08 to win the Welsh Senior Championships, finished well clear of a quality field.

However the 7 and 0 Warriors are one three undefeated sides that have all secured their British American Football Association Southern Conference Division Two divisional titles.
Neil Warnock is aiming high in his final season of football management and that means taking his Bluebirds back to the Premier League. Cardiff City’s manager insists he will retire at the end of 2019-20 or possibly earlier if they are not challenging to go up. “The reason I came to Cardiff was because I […]
