Neil Harris insists Cardiff City already have a cutting edge he can sharpen without spending any cash in next month’s transfer window. The Bluebirds manager has confirmed the club will only be making loan or free transfer signings in January, although a number of players are likely to leave. But Harris believes he has the weaponry in the likes of Robert Glatzel and Junior Hoilett – who both scored in Cardiff’s 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday – to make further investments unnecessary.
Wrexham FC are down in the Vanarama National League dumps, but they are far from out. The Dragons have a major recovery plan for 2020. Their 2-0 defeat at Maidenhead United was a body blow which kept them in the relegation zone, but most of their fellow strugglers also lost. Maidenhead were the only team […]
Newport County and Leyton Orient pay tribute to their former manager before they clash in SkyBet League Two action at Rodney Parade this afternoon. Edinburgh led both clubs to promotion from non-League football into League Two with Newport going up in 2013 and Orient last season before his death in June at the age of […]
Swansea City chairman Trevor Birch has suggested fans should prepare for possible bad news over the future of the club’s academy. The renowned production line – which has provided the likes of internationals Daniel James, Oli McBurnie, Connor Roberts and Joe Rodon in recent years – could soon be closed down in a bid to cut costs. Reports emerged last month that the Swans were considering closing their Category One academy at Landore as they continue to seek savings following their relegation from the Premier League 18 months ago.
Cardiff Devils 5, Guildford Flames 4 Andrew Lord’s Devils enjoyed ice hockey delight in Cardiff Bay and Davos, Switzerland – almost 1,000 miles apart. Joey Haddad sparked major celebrations at the Viola Arena when he scored the winning goal against Guildford Flames, while Devils forward Blair Riley made his debut for Team Canada. Riley played […]
Wales’ four regions are set to start the New Year by fighting over the players in Wayne Pivac’s national squad in a bid to receive more money from the Welsh Rugby Union. The governing body are planning to create an elite list of 38 men which will be made up of the Welsh-based players head coach Pivac sees as vital to his team’s development and long-term success. Moving forwards into 2020 each region will receive more funding from the WRU’s Professional Rugby Board (PRB) the more players they have in that 38-man party.
Neil Harris is expecting a rough ride when he takes his Cardiff City side to face Garry Monk’s fourth-placed Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Sunday. The two managers have locked horns before in the Championship, when Harris was in charge at Millwall and Monk was at the hem at Leeds United, Middlesbrough and then Birmingham. But they also have a shared playing history as a striker and defender, going back to the 2005-2006 season when Harris was playing up front for Gillingham and Monk was a centre-back at Swansea City.
Merthyr Town 2, Yate Town 1 Merthyr Town head into 2020 on the back of a hard-fought home win at the MetCoaches Stadium. Winger Corey Jenkins (3 mins) and Ian Traylor (15) put the Martyrs in a commanding position against Yate Town and they held on for an invaluable victory. It has been a tough […]
Newport County are struggling and their manager, Michael Flynn, is at the centre of the storm, having been regarded for so long as the man who brought sunshine days to Rodney Parade. Chris Lomas followed County to Exeter City on Boxing Day to see a team – and a manager – blown further off course in League Two. He may be under fire from fans – with some of the more extreme elements suggesting online he should now be sacked – but Michael Flynn insists he can turn the tide at Newport County. Flynn – the man who saved the club from falling out of the Football League and who masterminded two epic FA Cup runs – is in the middle of his biggest crisis since entering management.

Jarrod Evans is aiming to floor the Dragons on Boxing Day to prove his title of Wales’ current fly-half champion is one he deserves. The 23-year-old has only won three caps but will move into 2020 as the current holder of the red No.10 shirt after playing in the national side’s most recent match against the Barbarians last month. Evans will hope to continue his recent form against the resurgent Dragons when the teams meet at the Arms Park on Thursday in the Guinness Pro14 derby.
Neil Harris is hoping Jed Wallace is forced to eat his words when he comes to Cardiff on Boxing Day to try to gun down his former boss. The Millwall winger was among the first to congratulate Harris on his appointment as successor to Neil Warnock at the Bluebirds, but added a barb to his message of goodwill. “He wished me all the best with my opportunity to come to Cardiff and said he was looking forward to seeing me on Boxing Day and ruining my Christmas by playing well,” explained Harris.
Brad Mooar has admitted he was given an offer too good to refuse after confirming he will leave the Scarlets at the end of the season to coach the All Blacks. The region’s head coach will return to New Zealand to become their attack coach – reducing his stay in west Wales to just one fleeting season. Mooar, who only took over from fellow Kiwi Wayne Pivac at Parc y Scarlets at the start of this season, will join Ian Foster’s staff in a new-look coaching team.
Blair Riley, Cardiff Devils powerful, high end forward, has been called up by Team Canada for their Spengler Cup challenge over the festive period. The man from Kamloops, British Columbia spent seven successive seasons playing American League hockey, making more than 330 appearances for Stockton, St.John’s and Bridgeport, before joining Belfast. Riley played a major […]

Many Dragons players will have no case to complain when Keates implements his plan to bring in new players – and send a number on their way. Wrexham play second from bottom Chorley […]
Penarth-born former Cardiff City and Wales player Alan Harrington has died at the age of 86. Harrington, who made more than 400 appearances during a one-club career (1951-1966), was one of the Bluebirds’ greatest-ever players. He is survived by his wife Gloria and daughters Judith and Rachel. Welshmen Alan Harrington and Alf Sherwood had a […]

How do rugby players spend Christmas Day? For Wales forward Jake Ball, it’s pretty much every other dad, except for large helpings of self-discipline and denial – at least until the Scarlets have played the Ospreys on Boxing Day, as he tells Graham Thomas. Giant Jake Ball will limit himself to one tiny helping of Christmas pudding the night before – to ensure he’s lean and mean on Boxing Day when he tries to make mincemeat of the Ospreys. The Wales forward – who requires plenty of forkfuls of the right food to fuel his 19-stones body – admits he has a bit of a weakness for festive cake and pudding.
Bersant Celina has defended his impact at Swansea City this season and urged his critics to look beyond the statistics. The Swans midfielder was a significant influence for his side as they won 1-0 at Luton Town at the weekend, to move into the play-off places until Sheffield Wednesday’s victory over Bristol City dropped them back to seventh. Celina was recently left out by Swansea manager Steve Cooper and had become a target for some fans after some ineffective performances.
