Neil Harris Has Two Cardiff City New Year Resolutions . . . FA Cup Win Then Revenge Against Swansea

Neil Harris has set Cardiff City’s sights on FA Cup safe passage before gaining revenge at home to rivals Swansea City next week. The Bluebirds manager has demanded something memorable from his players in their FA Cup third round home tie against Carlisle after the humiliation of their 6-1 Championship defeat at QPR on New Year’s Day. Harris wants more than just the avoidance of a potential Cup banana skin against Carlisle, but any improvements will have to come without the services of flying winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who is set to undergo surgery on his ruptured hamstring next week.

Leigh Halfpenny Is A True Champion Says Scarlets’ Brad Mooar After Cardiff Blues Are Floored

Leigh Halfpenny has been labelled a true champion by Scarlets coach Brad Mooar after his goal-kicking decided a tense derby against Cardiff Blues. The Blues had been resurgent but they missed the chance to record a hat-trick of festive Welsh derby victories as the Scarlets sneaked a 16-14 win before a sell-out crowd at the Arms Park. After wins over the Ospreys and the Dragons, the Blues were narrow favourites for victory but poor goal-kicking cost them the match.

Mike Van Der Hoorn Blow Could Be Price Of Swansea’s Resurgence

Swansea City’s return to the play-off spots may come at a price – the loss through injury of influential skipper Mike van der Hoorn. The Dutch centre-back was helped off with a recurrence of a knee injury as the Swans beat Charlton 1-0 on Thursday night to move back into the top six of the Championship. Van der Hoorn is likely to miss Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie at QPR, but the fear for Cooper is that his absence could extend to the derby clash against Cardiff City next week and possibly beyond.

Steve Cooper Admits Andre Ayew Is Undroppable As Sam Surridge Leaves, Rhian Brewster Stays (For Now), And Others Are Told To Sharpen Up

Steve Cooper has urged his Swansea City forwards to be inspired by Andre Ayew and become undroppable. The Swans manager – whose team host Charlton Athletic tonight (Thurs) – has said he still has striking options, despite the return of loanee Sam Surridge to Bournemouth and the remaining uncertainty over whether a loan deal for Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster can be agreed. Without either Surridge or Brewster, Ayew will lead the attack for a match that could see the Swans return to the play-off spots if they win – but the manager wants more consistency from the likes of Borja Baston, Kristoffer Peterson, Wayne Routledge, Nathan Dyer and Aldo Kalulu.

Neil Harris: I Need To Clear The Decks At Cardiff . . . Or I’ll Go The Way Of Warnock

Neil Harris has lost patience with Cardiff City’s flops and vowed to move them on before they cost him his job. The Bluebirds manager appears to have reached a firm conclusion on those he believes undermined his predecessor Neil Warnock, the clarity brought into sharp focus by the 6-1 humiliation at QPR on New Year’s Day. It could now be a busier than anticipated transfer window for Harris, who clearly feels it is time to the clear the decks or risk going the way of Warnock who was sacked in November.

Welsh Medal Chasers Will Face The Challenge Of India

Welsh competitors will face Indian rivals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after all after India reversed earlier plans to boycott the event. The withdrawl had been announced over the absence of shooting as a medal sport, but the country’s Olympic association and the Games organisers announced on Monday that India had changed its stance. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had threatened to boycott the Games after shooting — which supplied 16 of their 66 medals at the 2018 Gold Coast Games — was dropped from the Birmingham programme as it is an optional sport for host cities.

Angus O’Brien is set to continue to call the shots for the Scarlets as he closes the door on 2019 and looks to brighter days ahead in 2020. But now the former Wales Under-20 international is back firing on all cylinders and says the pain of the past will drive him forwards as he looks to stay as first-choice fly-half at his club.

Cardiff City Plan Sober January . . . But Neil Harris Says They Can Still Get High

Neil Harris insists Cardiff City already have a cutting edge he can sharpen without spending any cash in next month’s transfer window. The Bluebirds manager has confirmed the club will only be making loan or free transfer signings in January, although a number of players are likely to leave. But Harris believes he has the weaponry in the likes of Robert Glatzel and Junior Hoilett – who both scored in Cardiff’s 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday – to make further investments unnecessary.
