Brothers Jacob and Ben Reynolds produced a remarkable family double at the Welsh Indoor Junior Athletics Championships in Cardiff. The Cardiff Athletics middle distance runners each claimed the 800m and 1500m double in their respective age groups during the two day championships at the National Indoor Athletics Centre at the weekend. First up, younger brother Jacob won the under-17 800m title in 2:00.72 ahead of Swansea Harrier Charlie Holland on Saturday morning.
Bentley Continental GT3 racer Seb Morris almost achieved a dream podium result on his debut in the Intercontinental GT Challenge at Bathurst in Australia yesterday, but a costly puncture for the No.8 car late in the race cruelly ended those hopes. Wrexham-born Morris and team-mates Alex Buncombe and Oliver Jarvis impressed hugely during their first race together, the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hours, with incredible pace around the Mount Panorama Circuit, tremendous team-work and immense tenacity. Following a luckless brake issue in final practice when Jarvis was at the wheel, quick-thinking from the Briton meant he avoided sustaining more damage to the car than might have been the case with lightning reactions to prevent a head-on collision with the perimeter wall.
Belfast Giants 0, Cardiff Devils 1 The Chef came up with the perfect recipe for Cardiff Devils at the SSE Arena in Northern Ireland. Canadian winger Joey Haddad, nicknamed the Chef because of his cooking prowess, scored his 26th goal of the season to keep Devils’ Elite League title charge on course. The 31-year-old forward […]
Charlotte Arter is celebrating after repeating history by breaking her own parkrun world record in Cardiff. The Wales and Great Britain international took a second off her previous record at the weekend to finish the 5km course in 15 minutes 49 seconds. It was last January that Arter ran 15:50 on the same Bute Park course to become the quickest woman in the 10-year history of the global phenomenon, parkrun.
Wayne Pivac is braced for “a massive step up” in next Saturday’s Guinness Six Nations showdown against Ireland. Wayne’s world has premiered strongly, with Wales following a comfortable victory over the Barbarians in November by launching their title defence with a 42-0 drubbing of Italy. Pivac’s players now head to Dublin in search of a record ninth successive Six Nations win, although Ireland were the last team to beat them in the tournament almost two years ago.
Belfast Giants 1, Cardiff Devils 0 Cardiff Devils suffered in Belfast, but damage to their Elite League title hopes was restricted when leaders Sheffield Steelers crashed 5-1 against Nottingham Panthers. A powerplay goal scored by Canadian Elgin Pearce during the middle period was enough to earn Belfast Giants the points. Devils managed only 16 shots […]
Rhian Brewster is living up to his billing as a striker other Championship clubs should be wary of, according to his Swansea City manager Steve Cooper. Brewster scored his second goal since joining in a loan move from Liverpool as the Swans came from behind to draw 1-1 at Preston.
The defending champions got the Wayne Pivac era off to a flying start as they beat Italy 42-0 in their coach’s first Guinness Six Nations campaign in charge of Wales. There was attacking promise in the first half, despite giving away penalties and opening space for Italy to exploit, but two tries from Josh Adams and three penalties by Dan Biggar were enough to give Wales a comfortable 21-0 lead at the half-time break. Pivac’s men did not start the second half like the first, as Italy enjoyed momentum by winning a few penalties at the scrum that came from line-out mishaps from Wales.
Rupert Shipperley netted on his debut as Great Britain held world No 1 Australia in their opening FIH Pro League game in Sydney. The Wales ace came off the bench in the thrilling 4-4 draw after Britain had led 4-2 going into the final quarter.
Borja Baston’s deadline night move to Aston Villa brought his Swansea City career to a close at a final cost of £2,214,285 per goal. The Spanish striker moved on a free transfer in order for the Swans to cease paying his high wages on a contract that was due to run out in the summer. Borja moved for £15.5m from Atletico Madrid in 2016, but scored just seven goals in 41 appearances during his time at the Liberty Stadium.
Alun Wyn Jones says Wales will not be looking back when they start Six Nations life under Wayne Pivac on Saturday. The reigning Grand Slam champions begin a new era of their international history against Italy in Cardiff. Warren Gatland’s success-laden reign – a 12-year stint which saw Wales win three Grand Slams and reach two World Cup semi-finals – ended earlier this season.
Reading’s Welsh manager Mark Bowen claimed clubs are powerless to prevent anti-social behaviour from individual fans after an away supporter was ejected for making an offensive gesture during his team’s 1-1 draw at Cardiff City. The second instalment of Cardiff and Reading’s winter trilogy echoed their bad-spirited encounter of six days before with a draw and constant taunts between rival Welsh and English fans. Yakou Meite’s opener for Reading was cancelled out by Callum Paterson, but once again it was the spiteful atmosphere between rival fans that captured much attention.
As the USA gets ready to plug itself in to the Super Bowl on Sunday, when the Kansas City Chiefs face the San Francisco 49ers, there will be at least two clubs in Wales with more than passing interest as Twm Owen reports. America’s biggest sporting event is said to be capable of bringing the world’s superpower to a halt, but in Wales the Super Bowl has inspired armchair fans into action for more than 30 years. American Football in the UK was kick-started by television coverage, including the Super Bowl shown live, on S4C and Channel 4 in the 1980s, and today Wales is home to both male and female clubs with the game also played at universities and by several non-contact flag teams.
Swansea City have released defender Cian Harries on a deadline day free transfer to Bristol Rovers. The Wales Under-21 international, whose contract was due to expire in the summer, has been recalled from his loan spell with Fortuna Sittard in Holland and makes the move to the Memorial Stadium. The transfer to the League One club includes a sell-on clause, with Harries joining a Rovers side sitting 13th in the third tier.
The Six Nations starts this weekend and as ever there are more questions about what could happen than there are firm answers. Ben Gould considers all the contenders. The 2020 edition of the Six Nations promises to be enthralling. The aftermath of the World Cup in Japan has marked a changing of the guard and the beginning of a new cycle. Fresh narratives are sprouting from the camps of all nations, and we wait to see which of the newcomers are ready to cement their place on the international stage.
Wayne Pivac has named his first Six Nations team to face Italy on Saturday but Robin Davey is underwhelmed by a lack of boldness in a fixture where the risks are at their lowest. When the new Welsh hierarchy took over we were promised greater adventure and added value after the more prosaic approach offered by Warren Gatland and Shaun Edwards, pretty successful though that was. But instead when head coach Wayne Pivac announced his first Six Nations team for the match against Italy at the Principality Stadium on Saturday we were dished up almost the opposite.
Brad Smith, Cardiff City’s first signing of this transfer window, achieved a major first when joined American club Seattle Sounders on loan from AFC Bournemouth. The man from Penrith, New South Wales won the Major League Soccer Cup with Sounders – and now he is on a mission to enjoy new success in South Wales. […]
George North can write a new chapter in his distinguished career for Wales – maybe even half a book – after being picked to play at centre for Wales. He may have won 91 caps, but the Lions and Ospreys wing is still only 27 years old and could conceivably play international rugby for at least another five years. How many of what could be potentially be another 50 or 60 caps will be earned with a number 13 on his back may well hinge on what happens against Italy on Saturday – as well as the long term fitness of the injured Jonathan Davies.
Crystal Palace (u-23) 2, Cardiff City (u-23) 3 Sion Spence completed Cardiff City’s big recovery against Crystal Palace in London, scoring the winner with three minutes left.
