Swansea City’s Newcastle Loan Star Freddie Woodman Admits: I Hate Football Without Fans

Freddie Woodman has admitted that fan-less football is leaving him cold, but it won’t stop him freezing out more opponents in Swansea City’s promotion bid. The Swans keeper kept a second successive clean sheet in the 2-0 home victory over Blackburn Rovers at the weekend which moved his team to second place in the Championship. Woodman – in his second season on loan from Newcastle – kept an impressive 12 shut-outs last season and the Swans are currently the joint tightest defensive unit in the division having conceded five goals in nine games.

JJ Williams . . . The Gun-Slinging Straight Shooter Who Never Just Followed The Herd

JJ Williams, who died last week at the age of 72, was one of the legendary names of the Wales team of the 1970s. But he was also renowned for a broadcasting style and status that was as unique as his Test try-scoring record for the Lions, as Graham Thomas recalls. The story goes – and was told by both – that JJ Williams once saved the international rugby career of Ray Gravell even before it had begun. It was 1975 and the night before Gravell was to have made his debut against France in Paris, but as a man filled with torturing anxiety he woke up his roommate at 4am by rummaging around with his suitcase.

Newport County Take 18 Points In A Month But Michael Flynn Insists: We Can Get Better

Brandon Cooper has earned the praise of his manager and paid back his Newport County team-mates for his miss in the Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out against Newcastle United. The centre-back rose to head home the winner three minutes from time, earning a 2-1 victory at home against Harrogate Town. His soaring strike at the far post converted an inch-percent corner from Scott Twine and hit the back of the net at the same end at which he had failed to score against the Premier League side last month.

Wayne Pivac Admits Wales Broke Down At The Breakdown And Hardly Fired A Shot

Wayne Pivac admitted Wales “didn’t fire too many shots” as his tough start to life as national head coach continued against Scotland. His team ended their Six Nations campaign condemned to their fifth straight defeat in Llanelli, with the Scots ruining Alan Wyn Jones’ landmark day in Test rugby with a 14-10 win. Wales captain Jones made a record 149th Test appearance but the veteran lock forward was on the losing side as Scotland claimed a first win on Welsh soil since 2002.

Armband Or Not, Andre Ayew Is Our Leader, Says Swansea City Boss Steve Cooper

Andre Ayew has been praised for his leadership as the Swansea City striker took his club’s armband and guided them to within sight of the top of the Championship. In a comfortable 2-0 victory at home to Blackburn Rovers, Ayew’s powerful 61st minute header followed Ben Cabango’s equally forceful effort from a corner in the 25th minute to stretch the Swans’ unbeaten run to four games, with no goals conceded in the last two. That surge has lifted Swansea to second place in the table and Reading’s first defeat of the season on Friday night means the gap between the two clubs is now just four points.

Newport County Looking For Five Star Rating . . . But It Means Nothing Yet, Says Michael Flynn

Newport County may be top of the table, but Michael Flynn is refusing to get carried away as his team aims for a fifth successive win for the first time since returning to the Football league in 2013. Newcomers Harrogate stand in the way of another notable landmark for County this weekend when they visit Rodney Parade. Their task will be to try to find a way to penetrate a defence that has only conceded one goal in the last 389 minutes of action.

“Oldie” Ryan Bennett Is Making Sure Swansea City Have A Head For Heights

Ryan Bennett has been backed to fill the Joe Rodon gap at Swansea City and maybe bring something extra, too. The Swans centre-back has impressed head coach Steve Cooper since his recent move from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Brought in as Rodon was sold to Tottenham for a cut price £11m earlier this month, Bennett has added a streetwise sense of solidity to the middle of the defence as well as an aerial attacking threat at set-pieces.

Wales v Scotland Is Dan Biggar v Finn Russell . . . Control v Creativity . . . But Is It Winning v Losing?

As Wales meet Scotland in their final round of the Six Nations today, it’s a meeting of two Lions candidates at No.10 – Wales’ Dan Biggar and Scotland’s Finn Russell. For Harri Morgan, they are both game-changers, but it all depends on what kind of game you’re playing and what are the costs of winning and losing. If you were to offer Gérard Houllier the opportunity to click ‘delete history’ on one of his quotes, I’d wager he’d scroll back to the summer of 2002, and that time he chose to compare new Liverpool signing, Bruno Cheyrou to Zinedine Zidane. If you don’t remember Cheyrou, well, I guess that’s kind of case in point.

All Bow To The Mighty And Magnificent Lions . . . But Know Your Place And Don’t Expect Much Thanks Or Any Money

The British & Irish Lions is the pinnacle of rugby in this part of the world. Many players and supporters grew up on the legends of the great Lions sides of the 1970’s. But the Lions aren’t kings of the jungle for nothing. They’re greedy, aloof and self-regarding as Steffan Thomas outlines. Imagine walking into […]
