Meg Lanning is determined to use her status as one of the biggest names in women’s cricket to inspire the next generation of young girls when she brings her unique talent to Cardiff. Australian captain Lanning has been an international star for the last decade and is the youngest centurion – male or female – in her country’s history. Now 28, and with 82 one day internationals and 107 T20 internationals on her CV, Lanning will play for Welsh Fire this summer in The Hundred – a new competition in which players from both sexes will play on an equal footing.
Rhys Enoch has revealed his victory at the Sunshine Tour’s Kit Kat Group Pro-Am event in South Africa felt like reward for overcoming tough times during lockdown. The Welsh golfer shot a final round of 67 on Sunday to win by one shot on 12 under par and claim his second victory on the Sunshine tour, which is based in southern Africa. Enoch has played very little tournament golf over the past 12 months and the 32-year-old – who played at the US Open in 2019 – admitted the victory at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club felt a huge relief.
Andre Ayew could miss at least two and possibly three of Swansea City’s key Championship matches if he goes away on international duty with Ghana. The Swans striker is due to captain his country in an African Nations Cup qualifier in South Africa on March 25. Unless the tie is moved elsewhere, then if Ayew played he would be forced to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days on his return and miss games against Birmingham City, Preston and possibly Millwall.
Training partners Joe Brier and Owen Smith blasted Great Britain’s 4x400m team on their way to a brilliant bronze medal at the European Indoor Championships in Poland on Sunday evening. The Welsh speakers, who train in Cardiff under former Wales and Great Britain 400m international Matt Elias, produced excellent first and second legs to set up a thrilling medal winning performance in Torun.
Ken McKenna and Sam Ricketts are the early front-runners to be appointed as The New Saints’ next manager. In a shock announcement, the club confirmed this afternoon that they had parted ways with Scott Ruscoe and his assistant Steve Evans with immediate effect. It is understood that the players were informed of Ruscoe’s departure earlier […]
When Alisha Butchers went over on her ankle in training with Bristol Bears Women last Tuesday, there was no way she could have foreseen the trouble, stress, and financial worries ahead. The 23-year-old Wales international has been forced to raise funds online for the surgery required to fix her ankle after falling foul of a medical insurance loophole. Butchers – who reached her £4,995 GoFundMe target in just five hours on Friday – wants her fellow female players to ensure they do not end up in the same position and liable for thousands of pounds of medical bills due to circumstances outside of their control.
Kris Jones finished an agonising three seconds outside the 2022 Commonwealth Games 10,000m qualifying standard in Newport on Saturday. Competing at the Elite Winter 10k event, Jones smashed his 10,000m personal best of 29.05.66 set in Highgate back in 2017. The Swansea Harrier finished second to Leeds AC athlete Emile Cairess, clocking a time of 28:33.17 – just outside the Birmingham qualifying standard of 28:30.00.
Colin Caton has ticked off many achievements during his 17-year tenure, guiding Bala Town up through the Welsh football pyramid. But recording a victory over The New Saints at their Park Hall home remains frustratingly elusive to the Lakesiders. Yesterday’s goalless draw extended Bala’s winless record in Oswestry, but this was perhaps as close as […]
By Owen Morgan There were walking and running personal bests for Welsh athletes at the Elite Only Winter 10K events in Newport on Saturday. Heather Lewis clocked a new 10,000m personal best of 46:44.77 to win the women’s race walk, despite having to spend time in the sin bin. Meanwhile, Cardiff’s Clara Evans clocked a […]
Dean Ryan has admitted he will have mixed feelings if Wales come calling again for his Dragons back row pair of Aaron Wainwright and Ross Moriarty. The dynamic duo were at the heart of the Dragons’ impressive 31-20 victory over the Ospreys in Bridgend that has dented the losers’ Heineken Champions Cup prospects and given Ryan’s men an outside sniff of qualification. It was the Dragons’ first win of 2021 and Wainwright – released for some game time by Wales coach Wayne Pivac – weighed in with a try to add to doubles from Jonah Holmes and Ashton Hewitt to give the visitors a bonus point victory.
Former Wales defender Jazz Richards has signed for Welsh Cymru Premier club Haverfordwest County. The former Swansea City and Cardiff City full-back became a free agent when he was released by the Bluebirds last summer. He looked close to signing for their Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday last month, but the Owls eventually opted not to pursue a deal.
Steve Cooper has insisted he works for a “classy club” after refusing to get involved in a war of words with Neil Warnock. The clash between the pair happened both during and after Swansea City’s controversial 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough at the Liberty Stadium. Warnock could be heard referencing Cooper’s father Keith during one of several rants during the game in which Boro conceded a 97th minute penalty and also had a goal ruled out for a foul.
No-one kicks sand in the face of Newport County defender Priestley Farquharson. After, how many other players in League Two can boast 63 England caps? County’s new defender Farquharson can do just that, although his international tally hasn’t been built up playing at venues like Wembley, Stade de France or the Principality Stadium.
The Ospreys could take a giant step towards Heineken Champions Cup rugby next season if they can complete the double over regional rivals the Dragons at the Brewery Field tonight. The top three teams in the two Guinness PRO14 Conferences qualify automatically for the top tournament in Europe and Toby Booth’s much-improved side are currently on 31 points with three games to play – the Dragons at home and then Leinster and Glasgow Warriors away. If they can beat the Dragons with a bonus point to reach 36 points then they will be guaranteed third place. If not, they will need to pull some points out of the bag on their final two away trips.
Swansea City’s promotion push is being driven along the hard yards by Connor Roberts, the man the fans have nicknamed the Crynant Cafu. Roberts may not yet have hit the heights of the most capped Brazillian player of all time, but his energy levels seem to be sourced from the same type of internal battery pack. The Swans and Wales wing-back is proving the dynamo driving his team’s promotion surge, but it is anything but a stroll in the park.
By Paul Jones Mick McCarthy admitted his 1000th match as a manager was otherwise not a very memorable occasion as his Cardiff City team were held to a goalless draw at Huddersfield. The Bluebirds manager saw his side escape with a point after Yaya Sanogo missed a second-half penalty for the home team. The visitors […]

Laura McAllister believes the modern FIFA she hopes to serve within bears no resemblance to the organisation which for years stood as a totem for corruption. McAllister, a director of the Football Association of Wales Trust, is aiming to become European football’s female representative on the world game’s ruling council in a UEFA Congress vote next month and its first with top-level playing experience, having captained her country on 24 occasions. A series of bribery and corruption scandals have tainted FIFA’s reputation over the last decade, but McAllister is confident that under president Gianni Infantino it has changed course significantly.
