Euros Evans may not have had much competitive rugby to enjoy over the past year, but he has still been able to enjoy the fruits of his labour as director of rugby at Coleg Sir Gar. As the figurehead at one of Wales and the UK’s leading rugby colleges, not to mention head coach at Welsh Premiership club Llandovery, Evans knows what it takes to develop players and push them up through the system. That’s why he was delighted to see two Sir Gar old boys, Javan Sebastian and Harri Doel, finally make their mark.

Adam Davies is looking forward to competing with Wayne Hennessey and Danny Ward for a starting place in the Wales team at the Euros – and is anxious to make up for lost time. Davies, 28, was one of the three goalkeepers to be selected by manager Robert Page for the tournament and is in Baku as many people’s unlikely lad. Piers Copeland clocked a big new personal best and Olympic 1500m qualifying time in France on Wednesday night. The Cardiff-based middle distance star clocked 3:34.62 finishing sixth in a high class field at the Meeting De Marseille World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze Level event.

Dave Phillips has been praised for his patience as well as his skills in earning a place in the Great Britain squad for the Paralympics this summer. The Welsh archer won a spot on the GB team this week – almost two years after he first thought he had landed a bullseye with selection. Although Phillips earned his place at the 2019 World Para-archery Championships in the Netherlands, his slot on the team could not be confirmed until after classification was completed – meaning he wasn’t included as part of the archery team announcement back in April.

This year’s Nicky Grist Stages has been given the green light to host the first major forest rally in Wales for 17 months, when it takes place on Saturday 10 July – although one of the compromises in these unprecedented times will be that spectators will unfortunately not be permitted to attend. An online streaming service will broadcast live from the stages instead.

The Football Association of Wales are coming under huge political pressure to re-think their controversial plans to re-organise women’s football. A group of Senedd members from across the political spectrum have condemned the FAW’s decision to relegate three teams from the Welsh Premier Women’s League from next season. Abergavenny Women FC – who finished fourth in the table – plus Cascade Ladies YC and Briton Ferry Llansawel Ladies – are all to be left out of the new, streamlined eight-team elite level.

Jonny Williams insists he will not be affected by speculation about his future as he prepares for yet another historic European Championship campaign with Wales. Williams, 27, was released by Cardiff City despite only joining the club from Charlton Athletic on deadline day in January.  With his club future uncertain, speculation has been rife about his next steps following the conclusion of this summer’s tournament.

Wales head coach Wayne Pivac believes young Dragons lock Ben Carter has the raw potential to step into the shoes of the great Alun Wyn Jones after he was handed his first senior international call. Carter, 20, has captained Wales at Under-18 and Under-19 level and has also played for the Under-20 side but only made a full Dragons debut against Munster in November last year. This has been his first full season of professional rugby, but the young tyro has impressed sufficiently to become one of five uncapped players in Wales’ 34-man summer Test squad.

Neco Williams has revealed how extra training at Liverpool has got him into peak fitness for Wales’ Euro 2020 campaign. Right-back Williams has found himself in the shadow of England’s Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield with little game-time since the turn of the year. The 20-year-old has played more games for his country than his club in 2021 – five to four – and was so concerned about his pre-Euros fitness that he volunteered for additional training sessions at Liverpool.

The 25-year-old has become the first Welshman to play in the MLR where he plies his trade for Houston SaberCats in Texas. And the Morriston RFC product has found a new lease of life in the States, where he believes rugby will develop into a major sport.

Joe Naughalty’s last-minute winner gave Wales a dramatic 3-2 victory over France following a wild, end-to-end battle, boosting their chances of reaching the semi-finals of the Men’s EuroHockey Championships in Amsterdam. Naughalty admitted it was not his cleanest ever strike but was thrilled for his team to produce the goods on the European stage as they did two years ago. “Great game! We are all a bit tired now,” Naughalty said. “Lots going on at the end but really important we kept our cool, kept playing our game and managed to sneak it at the end.

Ben Davies admitted Wales had plenty of work to do after being held 0-0 by Albania in their final Euro 2020 warm-up game. Wales drew a blank in front of goal for the second successive game after losing 3-0 away to France on Wednesday. Robert Page’s squad start their European Championship campaign against Switzerland in Baku on June 12.
