Gareth Bale believes Wales could benefit from a knockout Euro 2020 game at Wembley. Wales have not yet qualified for the round of 16, but they play Italy in Rome on Sunday knowing victory would see them top Group A and set up a Wembley date against probably either Austria or Ukraine. Italy will take that Wembley spot by avoiding defeat to Wales who, if they finish second in the group, will head to Amsterdam and meet the runners-up of Group B – most likely Denmark, Finland, or Russia.

Wales take on Italy in Rome on Sunday, with qualification for the last 16 of Euro 2020 already highly probable, barring a string of freak results. But the captain, Gareth Bale, insists his team are capable of the victory that would seem them top their group – giving further evidence of the wisdom of promoting Robert Page to interim manager, as Graham Thomas reports. Robert Page’s success in taking Wales to the threshold of qualification for the knockout stages of the Euros has come as no surprise to the man who made the call to appoint him. Kieran O’Connor – president of the Football Association of Wales – believes the decision to turn to Page as caretaker manager in the absence of Ryan Giggs has already been vindicated.

Daniel James insists Wales are capable of upsetting Italy at Euro 2020 and winning their group. Wales are on the brink of making the last 16 of the tournament after beating Turkey 2-0 in Baku on Wednesday. Italy, however, top Group A ahead of meeting Wales in Rome on Sunday, and have already qualified for the knockout phase after back-to-back 3-0 wins over Turkey and Switzerland.

By Alex Bywater England duo Zak Crawley and Sam Billings made their second appearances for Kent after returning from international duty as their team sealed a 40-run Vitality Blast win over Glamorgan in Cardiff. Crawley and Billings – both part of the England squad beaten by New Zealand at Edgbaston – made 15 and 30 respectively, but their bowlers did the business to defend a total of 144 for seven. Two wickets each for Marnus Labuschagne, Prem Sisodiya and Dan Douthwaite put Glamorgan in control, but they were dismissed for just 104 as Labuschagne failed for the first time in the Blast.

Robert Page has revealed the reason Gareth Bale is Wales captain is all about his character rather than just his talent. The Wales interim manager was full of praise for his skipper after Bale shrugged off a penalty miss to inspire his team to a magnificent 2-0 victory over Turkey at Euro 2020. Bale made Aaron Ramsey’s first-half opener with some superb vision before missing a penalty which could have put the result beyond doubt, but made amends in the final minute of the game in Baku to tee up Connor Roberts to double Wales’ lead and leave them on the brink of the last 16.

Glamorgan are up and running in this season’s T20 Blast and so, too, is their Aussie star, Marnus Labuschagne. Steve Smith had been scheduled to be playing some cricket in Cardiff this summer when Welsh Fire get going, but for Fraser Watson it’s Labuschagne you want to be watching if you’re curious about how Australia will gather their runs in the years to come. The other afternoon, with the sun beating down, the spectators at Sofia Gardens satisfied, and Glamorgan all but assured of a first T20 Blast win of the season – Marnus Labuschagne got out. To teammates and home supporters, it mattered little. To the outcome of the game, even less so.

Ethan Ampadu insists Wales have no fears that their Red Wall might be drowned out by thousands of noisy Turkey fans on Wedbnesday. The Wales midfielder know only between 500 and 1,000 Wales supporters are likely to be in the Olympic Stadium in Baku for their second Group A match of Euro 2020. Those fans – who have paid around £2,000 each for a week in Azerbaijan and gone against Welsh government advice – will be hugely outnumbered by Turkish fans who can reach Baku by car.

PRO 14 chief Martin Anayi has claimed the newly titled United Rugby Championship will operate at international rugby standards. That will raise an eyebrow among regular watchers of the Guinness Pro14 in Wales who have got used to many matches where the standards and intensity have been way beneath Test level. But Anayi insists the introduction of four new South African teams to compete in a new 16-team tournament will raise the league to new heights.

Growing up as a cricket-mad girl in Port Talbot, Alex Griffiths had far more opportunities to play the sport she loved than those who had gone before her. Still, by her own admission, cricket was a small part of her childhood sporting landscape which makes it all the more remarkable the 18-year-old has made it to the top of the game. A highly talented allrounder, Griffiths came through Wales’ development pathway and in one summer, she represented every team from her under-13 age group to the senior side.
