Geraint Thomas will try and roll back the years on Thursday as he bids to win a second gold medal for Wales – eight years after his first. The Welsh cycling legend finished on the podium at last month’s Tour de France but the 36-year-old will only have gold on his mind when he competes in the time trial at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Back in 2014, Thomas won gold in a red jersey in the road race at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, having already picked up a bronze in the individual time trial event.

Ever since Birmingham was announced host city of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, would-be Team Wales members have been anticipating the thrill of competing in front of friends, families and supporters.

The Welsh rugby sevens team put up a respectable performance at the Commonwealth Games in Coventry, but eventually fell to some very talented opposition. In a tough group, Wales always knew they would be up against it and were hopeful of a victory in their opening match against Canada. However, they were put to the sword by a powerful Canadian side, who are only one place above them in the Rugby Sevens Series standings, but looked far superior..

Wales internationals Ffion Tynan and James Ashfield claimed the Welsh Amateur titles in contrasting fashions at Pennard. While Delamere Forest’s Ashfield stormed to an 8 and 7 win over Alex James, Royal Lytham & St Annes, Pyle and Kenfig’s Tynan was taken to the 19th hole in her final against best friend Darcy Harry, Royal Porthcawl.

“Geeky” Romaine Sawyers is the man to boot-up the newly unboxed Cardiff City, according to manager Steve Morison. Sawyers scored the only goal of the game as a summer-assembled Cardiff began their Championship campaign with a 1-0 victory at home to Premier League drop-outs Norwich City. The midfielder arrived as one of 13 new players recruited by Morison this summer and will be the guiding force in smoothing the joins, says his boss.
