By Harry Corish To be sung to the tune of Guide Me O’ Thou Great Redeemer (Bread of Heaven) . . . “Six foot seven, bread of heaven, feed me till I’m Kieffer Moore.” He’s actually only 6ft 5in but no wonder Wales fans felt they needed a hymn with which to praise their World […]

The Devils enter the third round of the tournament and compete over the next three days against teams from France, Latvia and Slovenia. Starting from […]
By Gareth James Wales defender Connor Roberts will fulfil his World Cup 2022 ambition less than a year after fearing he would not survive a severe bout of pneumonia. Roberts was hospitalised last December and the situation was so grave that his wife Georgina was given no guarantee that the 27-year-old would pull through. “I […]
By David Williams Owen Watkin says Wales will have to front up physically against Georgia if they are to unleash their potent back-division this Saturday. Wales’ pack were impressive during last weekend’s hard-fought 20-13 victory over Argentina where they enjoyed 58 percent of territory against the abrasive Latin Americans. Georgia will pose a similar challenge […]
By Paul Jones Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey admits that he would love to have seen his “ultimate hero” Neville Southall play in a World Cup. Despite Southall’s sustained brilliance during a 92-cap international career that spanned 15 years, Wales did not make it to the global showcase, highlighted by agonising near-misses for the 1986 and […]
By Gareth James Football Association of Wales boss Noel Mooney has declared the World Cup a “game-changer” for Welsh football and the country itself. Skipper Gareth Bale and company arrived in Qatar in the early hours of Wednesday morning for Wales’ first appearance at a World Cup since 1958. Wales were the smallest nation to […]
By Paul Jones Wayne Pivac has urged his Wales side to back up last weekend’s victory over Argentina with another strong performance against Georgia this Saturday. Wales have had some tough test matches against Georgia in recent years, and Pivac is expecting another tough encounter. “We’ve looked at them very closely and I think they are […]
Daniel James says he owes his World Cup place to his late father Kevan and will be thinking about him when Wales start their tournament on Monday. James’ father Kevan died suddenly at the age of 60 in May 2019, just as the winger was on the verge of joining Manchester United from Swansea in a £15m transfer. “It’s down to him that I’m playing here today,” said James, whose father came from Aberdare in the Cynon Valley.
Welsh football fans will hope to raise a glass to honour the players out in Qatar next week, but admirers of Joe Ledley can start now. The former Wales star and legendary fans’ favourite will be guest of honour at a wine-tasting through sport event in Penarth on Wednesday night. Hosted by the Speakeasy Club at Old Penarthians Rugby Club, former Cardiff City, Celtic and Crystal Palace midfielder Ledley will be chatting about his memories of Wales’ unforgettable march to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 as well as his time with those three famous clubs.
By David Williams Josh Macleod will make his Wales debut against Georgia on Saturday – as a No.8 – as one of six changes made by coach Wayne Pivac that includes the return of wing Josh Adams. The Scarlets forward, who is normally a flanker, has been selected at No. 8. with Jac Morgan, who […]
Gareth Bale has handed Wales a massive World Cup boost by declaring himself 100 per cent fit for the tournament in Qatar. Skipper Bale’s fitness has been a source of major concern ahead of Wales’ first appearance at the finals for 64 years. The 33-year-old has played just half an hour of football since completing his first 90 minutes for over a year in Wales’ Nations League defeat to Poland in September.
By Gareth James Rob Page believes he can turn the Wales v England World Cup showdown into a scrap with Gareth Southgate to see who’s king of the desert. Wales manager Page and his England counterpart will meet in Qatar on November 29 in the final round of matches in Group B. By that stage, […]
Wales’ Commonwealth champion Joshua Stacey put up a brave fight against world number one Laurens Devos but had to settle for silver after a 3-1 loss in the final of men’s class 9 at the World Para Table Tennis Championships in Andalucia. Beating Devos is the Para table tennis equivalent of climbing Everest. The 22-year-old Belgian has not lost a men’s class 9 singles match since 2015 and is the reigning World, Paralympic and European champion.
Louis Rees-Zammit insists the hard edge Wales showed against Argentina has to be there for every Test they play. The Gloucester player thrived at full-back at the weekend as he came through his positional switch from wing thanks to lessons on a laptop with Leigh Halfpenny. Rees-Zammit admitted the heat was on Wales, but the hard sweat of a 20-13 victory over the Pumas has to be only the start.
By Matthew Burgess The Cardiff Devils put a miserable seven days behind them to temporarily sign off from their Elite League campaign with a morale-boosting 4-1 win over Manchester Storm on Sunday night. The Devils return to winning ways ahead of being the host venue for their Continental Cup group stage, following successive underwhelming defeats […]
Russell Martin has described Swansea City’s goalless draw at bottom club Huddersfield as a “brilliant performance.” The Swansea head coach watched his team dominate the game but their fifth game without a win leaves them outside of the play-off places as the Championship campaign goes into a four-week break for the World Cup in Qatar. Remarkably, the Swans’ stuttering form has not seen them fall out of the play-off picture and although they are back in eighth spot, they will resume on December 10 level on points with sixth-placed Millwall.
Cardiff City will use their winter World Cup break as a chance to improve, says manager Mark Hudson whose team are back in relegation trouble. Hudson watched the Bluebirds slip to a 1-0 defeat that sent Sheffield United to the top of the Championship and leaves Cardiff just a point above the drop zone with close to half the season already gone. It was back-to-back defeats for Hudson whose team have lost three of their last four games.
Justin Tipuric has admitted Wales were rightly trashed after their thrashing by the All Blacks and it fuelled their defiant victory over Argentina. The Wales captain gave an honest assessment of the criticism he and his squad received after the defeat to New Zealand – in which they leaked eight tries – and revealed how the players used it as motivation to overcome a dangerous Pumas team, 20-13. “We knew last week we’d have a lot of stick and rightly so, but this just shows the character in the team to bounce back,” said Tipuric.
Justin Tipuric insists he would like to return to coaching after his playing days are over – even though he reckons Wayne Pivac lives his life in a goldfish bowl Wales captain Tipuric famously combined playing with coaching at his village club Trebanos in his younger days. This weekend the Ospreys flanker will captain his country for the fourth time when he leads them into action against Argentina at the Principality Stadium in a match that will be shown in extended highlights form on Saturday evening on S4C.
Nico Matawalu has played in some bone-shuddering derbies – Fiji v Tonga, Fiji v Samoa, Glasgow v Edinburgh, and Montauban v Colomiers in France. But he’ll have a new version to add to his list by Saturday night when the Fijian international plays for his current club, Pontypridd, at home to Merthyr. It might not have the sunshine of his South Seas battles, or the media attention claimed by the big city Scottish clash, but the Valleys dust-up in the Indigo Premiership on Saturday is unlikely to leave Matawalu with fewer bruises – provided Merthyr can catch him, that is.
