Sam Vokes insists Wales can recover from back-to-back defeats to still qualify for the finals of Euro 2020. The nation’s hopes of making it to next summer’s finals through a top-two spot in Group E suffered a severe setback with a 1-0 defeat to Hungary in Budapest on Tuesday night. It was Wales’ second defeat in the space of four days after a 2-1 loss to Croatia on Saturday.

The Women’s World Cup has kicked off in France and today England – who edged out Wales in qualification – begin their campaign against Scotland in Nice. The tournament promises to create more noise than any before and, as Graham Thomas notes, is part of an increasing volume around the world, with Wales playing their part.  Odd, rather than even number years in the calendar – such as 2019 – are supposed to be the quiet ones. But the impact being made across the board by women in Welsh sport, and the rising commercial interest, suggests this year could be of landmark significance.

Ryan Giggs insisted he made the right call to leave David Brooks on the bench despite the impact he made as a substitute during Wales’ 2-1 defeat to Croatia. Brooks came on and sparked a Wales revival with his first goal for his country but it was not enough as Giggs’ side failed to take late chances in Osijek.
