Wales Seeking World Cup Turnaround But Face Huge Task Against Canada

Wales head coach Sean Lynn says his side must restore pride when they face Canada in their second match of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025.

Lynn’s team suffered a record 38-8 defeat to Scotland in Salford last weekend, leaving their hopes of progressing in the tournament in jeopardy.

Canada, ranked second in the world, began their campaign with a commanding 65-7 victory over Fiji, scoring 11 tries.

Scotland’s Francesca McGhie scored a hat-trick in her side’s win over Wales, while Canada’s Julia Schell crossed six times in 22 second-half minutes against Fiji.

Lynn has made seven changes to his starting XV for Saturday’s meeting with Canada.
Co-captains Alex Callender and Kate Williams are both injured, while 18-year-old Branwen Metcalfe is in line for a debut from the bench.

Opposite number Kevin Rouet has also rotated, making six changes.

McKinley Hunt, Emily Tuttosi and DaLeaka Menin form a new front row, Tyson Beukeboom wins her 80th cap to equal the Canadian appearance record, and Karen Paquin joins the back row.

Asia Hogan-Rochester makes her World Cup debut in the backline.

“We know we will need 23 players. It’s kind of a rotation but also a product of having a very strong team,” said Rouet.

Wales have not beaten Canada since May 2006. The Canadians have won the last seven meetings and lead the overall head-to-head 10-2, with two draws.

Lynn admitted his side’s performance against Scotland was unacceptable but believes the response in training has been positive.

“We’ve had some honest conversations during the week following the Scotland game and the girls have reacted positively. We all knew the performance last weekend wasn’t good enough and it was all about putting that to bed and having a really good training week,” he said.

“We looked at the team first and then picked up on individual errors. We made three line breaks and didn’t capitalise on any of them, and we couldn’t get a foothold into the game when we regained momentum.

“I just told the group we have to start learning and that everyone has to be a leader. We can’t just rely on Alex (Callender) and Kate (Williams) to lead on their own.”

Canada’s strengths in attack and their ability to offload will test a Welsh defence that conceded six tries to Scotland.

“Canada are ranked second in the world and are a very good side, so we now want to make sure we put pride back into the jersey. They have very good athletes and they love an off-load,” said Lynn.

“We didn’t have the physicality we needed against Scotland around the breakdown and we need to ensure that defensively we are making our one on one tackles.

“If we want to be a hard team to beat we can’t let a team score in the first 52 seconds. We want to try to make a fast start.”

Lynn underlined that selection is now based on performance, with several experienced players making way for new faces.

“The seven changes I’ve made are about giving other players a chance to show what they can do. If you are not performing, you are out,” he explained.

“Individuals have to step up and I’m excited to see how they do. If I ask the players to be brave then I have to be brave as well.

“All I want from the players is to put pride back into the jersey so we can go into the Fiji game with confidence. We have to learn from what we didn’t do against Scotland.”

Beth Lewis will captain the side as she wins her 60th cap. She admitted last weekend’s loss had been painful but believes Wales are ready to respond.

“It was a tough day last weekend and nobody is more disappointed than us. We get to go again this weekend and after some tough conversations we are ready to right a few wrongs,” said Lewis.

“There has been a lot of reflection and we were bitterly disappointed, but that is only fuel for us. Canada are one of the best teams in the world and we will have to be at our best.

“We’ll do our best to turn things around.”
