George North is returning home after being ruled out of the rest of Wales’ tour to New Zealand with a hamstring injury.

The British Lions wing suffered the injury in the 39-21 loss to the All Blacks on Saturday when tackling Waisake Naholo late on at Eden Park.

North had treatment on the pitch before being allowed to carry on, but broke down again as he attempted to stop Nathan Harris scoring the Kiwis fifth try of the game.

Wales coach Warren Gatland had hailed the Northampton flier’s performance in Auckland as “absolutely outstanding”.

Wales have already called up 18-year-old Ospreys wing Keelan Giles as cover.

North joins Dan Lydiate, Paul James, Lloyd Williams, Leigh Halfpenny and Alex Cuthbert on Wales’ injury list.

Wales play Super Rugby’s Chiefs on Tuesday then face the All Blacks in Wellington on Saturday before the final test in Dunedin on 25 June.
