Samu Manoa has left Cardiff Blues on compassionate grounds to return to California.
The 33-year-old USA international was seen as a major signing when he arrived in the summer but played just seven games.
Manoa’s move to South Wales had been made more difficult with his wife and five children remaining in the United States.
He had returned to California after picking up an injury and has now been allowed by the region to stay at his family home rather than return.
“Naturally we are very disappointed to lose a player of Samu’s quality but we understand his situation and it’s the right decision to release him from his contract on compassionate grounds,” said Blues head coach John Mulvihill.
“It is always challenging to adapt to a new environment, particularly when your family are on the other side of the world.
“We appreciate all the effort Samu has put in during the short time here, he is a good man and gave his all. We wish him all the very best for the future.”
Manoa bagged a try on his Guinness PRO14 debut against Toyota Cheetahs but the back row forward never made the impact expected following his signing.
Manoa, who last featured in the 26-14 defeat to Saracens in the Heineken Champions Cup, has emphasised his gratitude to Cardiff Blues for both the opportunity and understanding.
“My sincere thanks goes to Cardiff Blues and John Mulvihill for the opportunity, everything they have done for me and their understanding in recent times,” said Manoa, whose last appearance was in the Heineken Champions Cup defeat by Saracens.
“To represent Cardiff Blues was a great honour and experience for me. I was welcomed by my teammates and the great supporters from day one and I really appreciate that.
“The Blues have a great group of players and coaches and I wish them all the very best for the remainder of the season.”
