Former Wales Students Rugby League international Curtis Cunningham is set to undergo spinal surgery in Australia after his horrific crash.
The Cardiff-born player suffered a fractured skull, fractures to his spine and bruising to the front of his brain as well as other injuries when his motorbike was involved in a collision with car on a motorway in Mackay, Queensland.
Friend Leah Lambert has set-up a go fund me page to help pay for Cunningham’s treatment and recovery while he is off work which has so far raised around £3,000.
“He is a fighter loved by so many people and we all know he will pull through,” said Lambert.
The father-of-one was taken to Mackay Hospital following the collision on the Bruce Highway on October 10, but has now been transferred to hospital in Brisbane for the surgery.
Cunningham, 27, has lived in Australia for the past four years and played for Mackay Souths Sharks.
He played rugby union for for Bridgend, Pontypool, Beddau and Tonmawr before playing rugby league for Cardiff Demons, Celtic Crusaders, South Wales Scorpions, Gloucestershire All Golds, London Skolars.
Cunningham has lived in Australia for the past four years where he now plays for Mackay Souths Sharks.
On the website, Leah Lambert wrote: “He is a devoted dad to his daughter and is a loving and a caring person.
“So many people have so much love for Curtis and the support here is amazing, it’s a shame Curtis is not yet responsive enough to know about this.
“Due to his horrific injuries he will be out of work and will need help to support himself and his family.”
