Gareth Anscombe says he's relishing the opportunity to take on a fresh challenge in France after sealing a move to Top 14 side Bayonne, bringing his stint at Gloucester to a close after just one season.
The experienced Wales fly-half has signed a one-year deal with the French club, currently sitting fourth in the league, and couldn't hide his enthusiasm about the switch.
“I’m really pleased to announce that I will be joining Bayonne next season. I am really looking forward to testing myself in the Top 14 that is arguably the most competitive league in the world at the moment,” Anscombe said.
The 33-year-old playmaker joined Gloucester last summer following the collapse of a move to Japanese side Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath, which was derailed by a significant groin injury.
After more than a year on the sidelines, he surprised many with a resilient return, making 14 appearances this season and becoming a valuable part of the Cherry and Whites' campaign.
Despite his solid performances and the respect he earned at Kingsholm, the club surprisingly opted not to extend his contract.
Director of rugby George Skivington had reportedly considered a renewal, but the opportunity to bring in Ireland and Leinster star Ross Byrne, along with the emergence of young talent Charlie Atkinson, shifted Gloucester’s plans.
Anscombe’s departure marks another step in a well-travelled career that began in his native New Zealand before he moved to Cardiff in 2014.
He qualified for Wales through his mother and made his international debut a year later.

After being initially omitted from Wales' 2025 Six Nations squad, Anscombe earned a recall under interim coach Matt Sherratt for the final three games.
Despite his past setbacks, he has expressed his ambition to feature in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
A statement from Gloucester said: “Gloucester Rugby would like to thank Gareth for his time at the club and when the time comes, he will leave with the best wishes for him and his family on their next adventure in France.”
