Ebbw Vale stormed to a 40-22 bonus-point victory at Eugene Cross Park in their Super Rygbi Cymru top-of-the-table clash with Llandovery to move four points clear with a perfect 24 points out of 24.

The sending off of former Wales U20, Scarlets and Exeter Chiefs centre Corey Baldwin for a stamp on the face of home full back Evan Lloyd meant the Drovers had to play the final 32 minutes a man down.

Before Baldwin’s departure the previously unbeaten Llandovery were leading 22-14 in a titanic tussle.

With 10 minutes of him leaving the field The Steelmen had rocketed into the lead before going on to pick up the win and two priceless bonus points.

The key turning point came in the 48th minute when Baldwin lashed out with his boot as Lloyd held onto his leg at a ruck on the Llandovery 22.

Assistant referee Craig Evans had no hesitation in alerting Carwyn Sion, the referee, about the incident and he instantly produced a red card.

The penalty was kicked into the corner and Ebbw used their pack power to drive over for their third try a minute later.

Dorian Jones' conversion meant there was only one point between the two sides and it was the home team who took control from there on.

Three more tries flowed before the game ended with three of the home half-dozen coming from their hookers, Ieuan Morris and Charlie Manship.

Morris scored in both halves from driving line-outs to take his tally in four games this season to six, while Manship followed suit as he crossed on his debut for the club.

Llandovery started well with Ioan Hughes kicking a penalty in the sixth minute before Morris grabbed his first score. Rhodri Jones and Tomi Lewis then crossed in a five-minute purple patch for the Drovers to make it 15-7.

An overlap try for right wing Ewan Bowden in the corner just before the break allowed Jones to add the extras to make it 15-14 to the visitors at the break.

Morris picked up a yellow card for entering a ruck from the side on the Ebbw line and within a minute Tiaan Sparrow had barged his way over at the posts.

Hughes converted and Llandovery were looking good at 22-12. But that was it for them as three minutes later Baldwin’s rash act saw them go down to 14 men and Ebbw raced to victory with four unanswered tries.
