Ireland and Lions prop Cian Healy insists revenge will not be the motivation when Wales visit Dublin on Saturday.
The Leinster forward was part of the bedraggled Irish side who succumbed 25-7 to Wales in last season’s Six Nations, but is adamant that recent history plays no part in his desire to make amends.
Ireland started their new era under Andy Farrell with a slightly tentative 19-12 victory over Scotland and now face a Wayne Pivac-refreshed Wales who thumped Italy 42-0.
But Healy insisted: “The motivation for me here is to succeed with this team.
“I’m not looking for vengeance or revenge or anything like that. I want success with the lads around me.
“That means going to the well, to the dark places. That means doing the harder thing than the easier thing.
“That’s what would be more enjoyable if we come out of the weekend with the win – knowing that I put myself in that place – not thinking – if I don’t do it, it [2019 in Cardiff] will happen again.”
Ireland coach Farrell has made two enforced changes to the team that will aim to repeat their 2018 victory over Wales.
Robbie Henshaw has been named at outside centre after replacing the injured Garry Ringrose at half-time in last Saturday’s opener.
Peter O’Mahony came on after only five minutes for Caelan Doris and, with the young Leinster star ruled out, the Munster skipper starts at blindside flanker with CJ Stander reverting back to No.8.
Farrell said: “I thought Wales were great (against Italy), that’s their second game together after the Barbarians game.
“I think everyone’s getting carried away with their wide game and they’re doing it really well, but the same old traditions that we saw over the last 10 years under Warren (Gatland) are still there.
“But our confidence is great, believe it or not, because what a position to be. We won our first game at home – some good, some fix-ups, and people aren’t giving Scotland the praise they deserve.
“Hats off to Scotland, we knew it was going to be ferocious because they weren’t happy with what we did to them at the World Cup. They threw everything at us, it was attritional and a proper Test match that needed winning.
Uncapped forwards Dewi Lake and Taine Basham have been called into Pivac’s squad.
The Wales Under-20 internationals have been training with the senior squad in recent weeks and their promotion follows injuries to both Josh Navidi and Elliot Dee.
It is hooker Lake’s first senior call-up, but fellow 20-year-old Basham, a back rower, was a Wales squad member for the non-cap fixture against the Barbarians in November.
Navidi, who remains part of the squad, is currently sidelined because of hamstring trouble, while Saracens full-back Liam Williams has not yet recovered from an ankle injury than ended his World Cup.
But Dragons hooker Dee, Ospreys centre Owen Watkin and Scarlets scrum-half Gareth Davies are all expected to be in the selection mix for Saturday.
