- Welsh Ace Tesni Earns Stunning US Open Squash Win
Tesni Evans stunned England’s Sarah-Jane Perry to earn a Welsh place in the FS Investments USA Squash Open semi-finals.
Cardiff-born Evans, a 25-year-old who lives in Rhyl, hit back from behind to earn her first ever win against Perry at Philadelphia’s Drexel University
World number 12 Evans hit back from two games down to beat fifth-ranked Joelle King (New Zealand) 3-2 to qualify for the last eight and then staged another sensational comeback against Perry.
The England international from Birmingham went 2-1 ahead before her Welsh opponent levelled things with 57 minutes played.
In the fifth game Evans took a stranglehold grip at 5-0 and Perry could do nothing to stop her younger opponent.
The match ended after 71 minutes with Evans winning 11-9, 5-11, 6-11, 11-8.
Those wins are certain to improve Evans World ranking again.
That victory earns her a place in the last four against Laura Massaro (England) or Raneem El Welili (Egypt), who play later this evening.
In the other semi-final Nour El Sherbini (Egypt) plays Camille Serme, the World number four from France.
El Sherbini quickly won in straight games against compatriot and surprise quarter-finalist Yathreb Adel to reach her third career US Open semifinal.
“I played really well,” said El Sherbini. “Nobody knows how long we have been playing against each other. We are the same age and have been playing since we were five years old. She is really tough to play against and I’m really happy with my performance.”
El Sherbini will face Serme in a rematch of the 2016 US Open final after the French international ended Amanda Sobhy’s run in a decisive three games.
Frenchman Gregory Gaultier, who plays for Cardiff-Based Welsh Wizards in the Premier Squash League, has his US Open quarter-final against Ali Farag.
New Zealand’s world number eight Paul Coll and Mohamed ElShorbagy (Egypt) face each other in the semi-finals, while Gaultier or Farag take on Simon Rosner or Miguel Rodriguez.
