Wales Host Home International Masters Squash Championships

Wales host the Home International Masters Squash Championships this weekend.

The over-50 and over-70 events are being played at Sport Wales National Centre and Cardiff Squash Club on Friday and Saturday.

Wales play England, Scotland and Ireland over the two days.

Sian Johnson and former Cardiff SRC coach Gary Hales are captains for the over-50 Welsh teams, while Gary Williams heads up the over-70 men’s team.

Former British Open Masters champion Brian Phillips, who lives in Berkshire, is aged 77 and plays for Wales in that age group.

Wales women’s over-50: Sian Johnson (capt), Lynne Davies, Kathryn Horler-Clee, Wendy Norris, Heather Charles, Jenny Jones.

Wales men’s over-50: Gary Hales (capt), Jon Evans, Richard Murphy, Ian Fenner-Evans, James Walters, Steve Evans.

Wales men’s over-70: Gary Williams (capt), Brian Phillips, Peter Kerry, Duncan Jones, Leighton Evans, Haydon Jones.

While Wales prepare to host the masters championships, the national body is also sending men’s and women’s teams to the Senior European Team Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

They run from Wednesday, April 26 to Saturday, April 29 and the Welsh team coaches are Andrew Evans and former British Open champion David Evans.

The men are in a group with Austria and Portugal, while the women’s team play England, Belgium and Denmark.

Men’s number one Joel Makin, 22, is from Pembrokeshire, while Welsh champion Peter Creed plays at two and was born in Caerphilly.

Cardiff-born Tesni Evans is ranked at number 18 in the World and leads the women’s team, while Deon Saffery, from Barry, is number two.
