Wales Golf Pays Tribute To Two Stalwarts Of Game

Two stalwarts of women’s golf in Wales have passed away, with their contributions being recognised by Wales Golf.

Former Ladies Home International team manager Olwen Shepherd passed away at the age of 87.

It followed the passing of former chairwoman of the Welsh Ladies Golfing Union Brenda Connor, who took over that role in 2004. The WLGU merged win the men’s governing body Golf Union of Wales to form Wales Golf three years later.

Shepherd also served on the WLGU Council, as well as representing Wales on the Council of the Ladies Golf Union

“She also undertook selection duties for Wales and was a fantastic manager to the Ladies Home International team when I was international Team Captain in 1990,” said Pam Valentine, who also captained both Royal St David’s and Wrexham to the Welsh Team Championships.

Connor, from Llandudno, was also a past captain of Caernarvonshire and Anglesey County Veterans Association and was Lady Captain of the North Wales club in 1993.

Her daughter Fiona, herself a Welsh Ladies Amateur Championship finalist in 1988, said, “My Mum thoroughly enjoyed her role as Chair and especially loved supporting the juniors and encouraging the future of women’s golf in Wales.”

Wales Golf Chief Executive Hannah McAllister added, “These two women made a tremendous contribution to women and girls golf in Wales, with their enthusiasm, passion and knowledge.

“Our thoughts and best wishes are with both families, who can be proud of the impact made by Olwen and Brenda.”
