Tesni Topples King In Stunning US Open Upset

Tesni Evans produced an epic comeback from two sets down to beat Joelle King at the US Open.

The Rhyl-based star claimed one of the biggest wins of her career in Philadelphia after a 69 minute battle with the No 4 seed.

Evans lost the first two sets 7-11, 12-14 in the third round encounter, but then stunned the New Zealander reeling off the next three 11-9, 11-7, 11-5.

“I was getting completely outplayed for the first two games, she had me everywhere and was all over me, so something had to change,” said Evans, who had lost two of her three previous games against her close friend..

“I tried to change my game a little bit and luckily it paid off in the end.”

The No 12 seed will now face England’s Sarah-Jane Perry, seeded eight, in the quarter-finals.

Perry triumphed 11-5,11-8, 12-10 in her third round match against India’s Joshna Chinappa.

Evans added: “I’m not going to lie if you look at the head-to-head then I’m not looking very good!

“I’ve never beaten her before but it’s another opportunity to have another go and I’m really looking forward to the quarter-finals and I will give it everything in that match.”

The win continues an incredible year for Evans who bagged bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April.

But fellow Welsh team-mate Joel Makin saw his US Open run ended with defeat against No 2 seed Ali Farag.

The Pembrokeshire-born player lost 11-5, 13-11, 11-5 in 52 minutes at the Daskalakis Athletic Centre.
