Welsh table tennis sensation Anna Hursey produced a stunning victory to reach the last 16 of the Junior Girls at the Thailand Open.

Welsh table tennis sensation Anna Hursey produced a stunning victory to reach the last 16 of the Junior Girls at the Thailand Open in Bangkok.

The Cardiff youngster beat Malaysia’s Karen Lyne who won bronze in the doubles at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia where Hursey made history as an 11-year-old.

Hursey, seeded 36 for the junior girls  triumphed 4-2 in the round of 32 match against the 16-year-old Malaysia who was seeded eight places above her.

She lost the first game 12-10, but then reeled off the next three 11-7, 11-2, 11-5.

Lyne responded to take the next 11-6, but Hursey completed the superb victory by winning the next game 11-9.

The Cardiff High School pupil will face France’s 13th seed Isa Cok in the last 16 in Bangkok on Sunday.

In her last 64 match yesterday, Hursey had beaten Mexico’s Arantxa Cossio Aceves 4-3.

The 12-year-old has been competing in the event having taken part in an ITTF elite performance camp in the Thailand capital alongside some of the world’s best junior and cadet players.

Hursey is also through to the last 32 of the cadet singles where she is seeded 11.

In the round of 64 she beat South Korea’s Lee Daeun 3-0 to set up a match against India’s Suhana Saini.
