Hannah Powell broke three British records as she just missed out on a medal at the European Championships in Georgia.

The 26-year-old powerhouse lifted 83kg in the clean and jerk in the 45kg category in Batumi – five kgs more than the record she set in Milton Keynes in January.

But Powell agonisingly fell one kg short of the bronze medal which went to Romania’s Cosmina Pana with a lift of 84Kg.

Bulgaria’s Ivana Petrova won (89Kg) with Saziye Erdogan of Turkey taking silver (88Kg).

Holyhead-based Powell’s best lift in the snatch was 63Kg beating by one kg the record she set at the English Championships three months ago where she competed as a guest.

The lift earned her sixth place in only her second competition since competing for Wales at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Turkish lifter Erdogan won with a lift of 75Kg.

Powell, nicknamed the ‘Mighty Atom’ finished with a combined total of 146Kg – a massive six Kg more than the record she set in Milton Keynes to qualify for the Europeans.

The Bangor University graduate finished sixth overall as Erdogan took the combined gold with a total of 163Kg.

Training partner and Wales’ Commonwealth Games champ Gareth Evans competes on Monday.
