Luke Rowe is already doing strength work in the gym – just three weeks after breaking his leg on his brother’s stag do.

The Cardiff-born rider smashed his fibula and tibia jumping on a rock while white-water rafting in Prague.

Rowe could miss much of next season but is determined to be back as soon as possible.

But Rowe also admits the long lay-off has already seen him work his way through tv boxed sets including Only Fools and Horses.

The Team Sky rider said: “I was already doing little exercises after a week just to keep the strength in my leg and I’m on my way to the gym now, so that’s a step forward.

“I’m going to start doing some anaerobic work, things like hand cycling. They might try and prop me up on a rowing machine! It just feels good to be able to do something.

“I’m obviously spending a lot of time at home, but I’m using the machines to help with muscle strength and bone healing and doing physio at home, so that takes up a good chunk of time and you can get into a bit of a routine.”

Rowe has also been catching up with Sky’s exploits at the Vuelta a Espana where Chris Froome is going for the Grand Tour double.

The 27-year-old played a key role as Sky’s road captain in helping Froome to a fourth Tour de France title in July before suffering the injury on brother Matt’s stag-do.

He added: “I’ve been watching the Vuelta on TV and supporting the boys. It’s obviously been great to see them going so well.

“I’ve also been smashing Only Fools and Horses and getting through the boxsets as well.

“I’ll be around the team when we start doing the planning for next season, trying to get to the camps, getting to know the new guys and being where all the physios are with the gadgets and gizmos to help with my recovery.

“The team has been great and done everything I could have asked or in these first few weeks.”
