Helen Jenkins is targeting an October comeback after giving birth to her second child with husband and fellow Welsh triathlete Marc.
Wales’ two-time world champ plans on running in the Cardiff Half Marathon on October 6.
Jenkins will combine looking after Max, who was born in May, and 21-month-old daughter Mali, with a return to training overseen by coach Marc.
The 35-year-old, who has competed in three Olympics as well as winning the ITU world title in 2008 and 2011, is targeting next year’s Tokyo Games or an Ironman Triathlon.
The Cardiff Half will also be the Bridgend-based triathlete’s first event since last year undergoing similar spinal fusion surgery that golfer Tiger Woods had before his triumphant comeback at April’s Masters in Augusta.
“I am feeling very lucky to add Max to our family as a brother for Mali, it was a really special moment,” said Jenkins. “Thankfully, this time it was a much easier labour and I was out of hospital in a day.
“I am really looking forward to return to training and will hopefully get back to competing in October.
“Hopefully I will be able to show Mali and Max what their mum and dad used to do pretty well for a living in these next steps of my career, whatever that looks like after spinal surgery and two kids.
“I managed to train gently right up until the day prior to giving birth and I hope my body will respond well as I return to hard training’
Husband Marc, who also competed in the 2004 Olympics, added: “We are both excited to adding Max to our family.
“We are looking forward to the next chapter and sporting wise, seeing if Helen can get back to the level that will show our children what mom and dad do in the sport of triathlon.”
