Ffion Tynan Leads Wales Girls To Stunning Victory In Ireland

Wales Girls claimed one of their best wins with victory in the Irish Girls U18 Stroke Play Championship, seeing off teams from the Home Nations and around Europe.

Pontyclun schoolgirl Ffion Tynan was second in the individual event, after leading going into the final round, with Newport Links’ Carys Worby in 13th and Isle of Wedmore’s Harriet Lockley in 23rd.

That combination meant Wales triumphed in the team event by five shots from Denamrk, with Irish teams third and fourth, Sweden fifth and England in sixth in the event held at Roganstown.

Tynan led after a second round 67, but a 73 in the final round allowed Sweden’s Lovisa Gunnar to win by three shots following a final round score of 69 . Denmark’s Celien Brovoid Sanne was third, a further four shots adrift.

Worby was also challenging after two opening rounds of 71, but fell back with an 80 in the last round, while Lockley opened with a 73 before posting two 76’s.

“It was not enough to win, but really pleased to finish second in the Irish Ladies Golf Girls Championships, level par over three rounds,” said Tynan.

“Wales Golf won the team event with Carys and Harriet, we learned so much this week and so many positives.”

Wales Golf director of performance Gillian O’Leary added, “This is a great win for our girls, with their individual performances combining to take the team event in a high-quality field.

“It shows that their hard work over the winter with the Wales Golf High Performance team is transferring into success on the course at this early stage of the season and it sets them up well for their upcoming tournaments.”
