Evans Books Place In Knock-Out Stages In Emphatic Fashion

Callum Evans thrashed his Scottish rival to reach the knock-out stages of the European Table Tennis Championships in Alicante.

The Tonyrefail ace triumphed 4-0 in his final Group 23 match in Spain to reach the last 64 on Thursday after finishing second in his group.

The top three were all level on five points, but Evans joinedS witzerland’s Lionel Weber in the knock-out stages having taken the scalp of higher ranked Tamas Lakatos of Hungary with a stunning 4-0 win on Wednesday.

Evans, seeded 101 in Alicante,  beat Scotland’s Colin Dalgleish 11-9, 11-5, 11-9, 11-6 to book his spot in the last 64.

It was a busy morning for Evans who also teamed up with England’s Maria Tsaptsinos in the mixed doubles  second preliminary round , but they were beaten 3-1 by the Czech Republic duo of Pavel Sirucek and Hana Matelova.

Charlotte Carey also had a crunch final Group 7 game in the women’s singles, but the Sweden-based ace was beaten 4-2 by Belgium’s Lisa Lung.

Carey went down 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 8-11 to finish third in her group behind Lung and Spain’s Sara Ramirez who won all three of her games.

Carey betaen in singles but won mixed doubles match at European Championships.

But Carey then joined England’s Paul Drinkhall to win their mixed doubles second preliminary round match 3-1 against the Slovakia duo of Peter Hribar and Aleksandra Vovk.

Carey and Drinkhall had been given a bye in the first preliminary round.
