Welsh weightlifting ace Catrin Jones bagged a superb bronze medal at the World University Championships in Poland. The Bangor University psychology student finished third in the clean and jerk with a best lift of 93kg.

Welsh weightlifting ace Catrin Jones bagged a superb bronze medal at the World University Championships in Poland.

The Bangor University psychology student finished third in the clean and jerk with a best lift of 93kg.

Mexico’s Susana Fuentes Zavala, five years Jones’ age, took gold with a lift of 98kg in the 53kg category.

The USA’s Megan Grantom took the silver having also lifted 93kg, but did so at her first attempt compared to Jones’ second and final attempt.

Jones finished eighth in the snatch event with a best lift of 72kg to finish the completion an excellent fourth overall missing out on another bronze by 1kg.

The 19-year-old, who competed for Wales at the Commonwealth Games last April, had a combined total of 165kg.

Fuentes Zavala won the overall gold with a total of 172kg from Grantom (168kg) with France’s Garance Rigaud just edging out Jones for the overall bronze with a total of 166kg.
