Nigel Clough has a lot of time for Irish defender Mark O’Brien, the man who kept Newport County in the Football League. Dublin-born O’Brien, still only 24-years-old, smashed home County’s 89th minute winner in their final match of the season against Notts County to ensure they avoided dropping into non-League football. “Nothing compares to this […]
Michael Flynn is Newport County manager for the next two years. Flynn’s appointment has been confirmed by the club and he said: “Nothing makes me prouder than to take charge of my hometown club.” Newport-born Flynn, 34, kept Newport in League Two thanks to seven wins in 12 matches under his caretaker command. He starts […]
It’s make your mind up time at Newport RFC. To back, or not to back, that is the question. Robin Davey sets the scene before Tuesday evening’s crucial vote. D-day has arrived when the future of the three teams playing at historic Rodney Parade will be sorted one way or another. A yes vote by 75% of Newport RFC shareholders on a plan by the Welsh Rugby Union to take over Rodney Parade means survival for Newport, the Dragons and Newport County.
By Terry Phillips Michael Flynn will be appointed permanent Newport County manager this week. Flynn kept his home city club in the Football League against all the odds and Gavin Foxall, club chairman of operations, says he did a ‘phenomenal job’. County maintained their League Two status on a dramatic final day of the […]
Newport County 2, Notts County 1 Mark O’Brien’s perfect timing sent Newport County fans into a frenzy of wild celebrations at Rodney Parade. The Dublin-born defender smashed home Newport’s winner after 89 minutes of their League Two clash with Notts County and says: “I will remember that moment forever.” Relegation rivals Hartlepool United were leading […]
Mike Flynn insists he will offer no advice on how Newport County’s players should cope with the club’s day of destiny on Saturday. The caretaker manager – who has taken his team to the brink of survival – must inspire them for one last heroic deed at home to Notts County. If Newport can win, then they will preserve their status in the Football League, but anything less could mean final day relegation if similarly threatened Hartlepool manage to beat League Two title-chasing Doncaster Rovers.
Mike Flynn will hold talks over his future with Newport County next week – regardless of whether or not they are still in the Football League. The caretaker boss wants to remain in charge at the club, even if the worst happens and they are relegated from League Two on Saturday night.
Might Newport RFC, if set free by severance on 9th May, actually be on the crest of a renaissance? Amidst all the doom-mongering over the future of rugby in Newport and Gwent, Geraint Powell looks at whether Newport RFC might possibly be on the verge of becoming much stronger in the Premiership if the shackles are finally released? It has perhaps to date been inevitable that the focus in Welsh and Gwent (including the city of Newport) rugby has mostly been on the future of the Newport Gwent Dragons professional regional franchise, with very little written in the media about the future of the historic Newport RFC itself and despite the references to this future in the documentation for the shareholders. Manager Mike Flynn believes his Newport County players will deliver the win they need against Notts County at Rodney Parade on Saturday (5.30pm). Victory will ensure Football League survival and Newport-born Flynn says: “It’s going to be horrendous, it’s going to be nerve-wracking. “But I really think the boys are going to deliver because they’ve been […]
Carlisle United 2, Newport County 1 Newport County face a tension-packed afternoon at Rodney Parade next Saturday. They must win at home against Notts County to be certain of staying in the Football League. Survival will be decided by that County v County clash plus Hartlepool United v title-chasing Doncaster Rovers at Victoria Park. All […]
Hartlepool United have warned Newport County ‘We’re coming for you.” The rivals are waging a fight against the drop – and either of them could yet go down. Newly appointed United manager Matthew Bates, who took over from former Cardiff City boss Dave Jones, has pledged his team will go for goals at Cheltenham Town […]
Newport County are in charge of their own League Two destiny, but they face a major test of character at Carlisle United on Saturday (3pm). They are second from bottom after winning six of their last 10 matches – and are now in a mini-League of three fighting against relegation. One of Hartlepool United, Newport […]
