After weeks in the pipeline, the deal to bring Wales striker Nathan Broadhead to Wrexham from Ipswich Town is about to be completed.

Wrexham have agreed a record-breaking deal worth up to £10m to sign Wales international Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town.

It's a move that not only brings the winger back to his boyhood club but also sends another clear message about the scale of the club’s ambition under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The 27-year-old is travelling to north Wales today to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of the transfer.

The fee, which includes performance-related add-ons, dwarfs Wrexham’s previous record of over £3m — set just last month when they signed Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest.

It is the latest statement signing since Reynolds and McElhenney took over the club in 2021, with Wrexham repeatedly pushing the financial boundaries in pursuit of a rapid rise through the English football pyramid.

Broadhead’s return has been in the works for several weeks.

Wrexham first made their move last month, agreeing an initial £7.5m deal, but Ipswich were unwilling to sanction the transfer until they had secured extra cover in wide areas.

The arrival of Chuba Akpom from Ajax has now paved the way for the move to go through.

Bangor-born forward Broadhead, who spent part of his youth career at Wrexham before joining Everton, made two senior appearances for the Toffees before loan spells with Burton Albion, Sunderland, and Wigan Athletic.

He joined Ipswich permanently in 2023 and became an influential figure, helping the club secure back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.

Last season, Broadhead made 18 top-flight appearances under Kieran McKenna, scoring twice, and also added to his growing reputation with the Wales national team, netting two goals in 14 senior caps.

His first international strike came on debut against Croatia in 2023.

Ipswich were reluctant to let him leave but see the deal as good business given he is entering the final year of his contract.

The winger made himself available for their final pre-season game against Auxerre and the Championship opener against Birmingham City, but illness ruled him out of the midweek Carabao Cup tie against Bromley as talks with Wrexham accelerated.

When completed, the move will make Broadhead Wrexham’s ninth signing of the summer following promotion from League One.

He will join an influx that includes forwards Josh Windass and Ryan Hardie, defenders Conor Coady and Liberato Cacace, midfielders George Thomason and O’Brien, and fellow Wales internationals Danny Ward and Kieffer Moore.

His arrival also continues a growing trend of top-level Welsh talent making the switch to the Stok Cae Ras.

Broadhead follows Ward and Moore in pulling on the red shirt, and his versatility across the front line will give manager Phil Parkinson additional firepower in attack.

For Broadhead, the transfer represents a return to familiar surroundings and the chance to play a leading role in the most ambitious chapter of Wrexham’s modern history.

For the club, it is another record smashed — and a powerful statement that they intend to compete for the Championship’s top places immediately.
