Negotiations to bring in Marítimo boss Vitor Matos have gridlocked over his release clause — leaving Darren O’Dea to step into interim charge as the uncertainty drags on.
The club had moved quickly after missing out on first-choice target Kim Hellberg, who is set to take over at Middlesbrough.
Matos, the former Liverpool development coach now impressing in Portugal’s second tier, soon emerged as Swansea’s preferred candidate.
But hopes of securing him swiftly have evaporated for a club who sit 18th in the Championship with one win in their last seven games.
Marítimo released a firm statement on Thursday insisting Matos will not be allowed to leave unless his €1m (£881,900) release clause is paid in full, shutting down any possibility of compromise.

Their statement read: "The board of Maritimo, Madeira can confirm that Vitor Matos will continue at the club, despite interest from other institutions."
President Carlos Andre Gomes stressed the club’s position, with the statement adding: "President Carlos Andre Gomes recognises the external attention generated by the quality of the manager's work but assures that the club's rights are protected."
Marítimo doubled down on that stance, saying: "The club considers it natural for there to be interest in Vitor Matos, and highlights the excellence of his work and his own satisfaction with the project."
They also claim no flexibility would be offered: "The club reiterates that an exit can only occur pending the full payment of the release clause of one million euros, without exception or alternate negotiation."
That firm posture has left Swansea unable to push the deal over the line, despite Matos having been their leading candidate after Hellberg.
As the impasse continues, Swansea have confirmed that O’Dea — assistant under the recently sacked Alan Sheehan — will oversee the team until further notice.
A club statement said: "Swansea City can confirm Darren O'Dea will be in interim charge of the men's first team while the recruitment process for a new head coach remains ongoing."
O’Dea moved from Celtic in May to become Sheehan’s number two and will be supported by Martyn Margetson, Kris O’Leary and Richard Stearman.
The club’s statement added: "The 38-year-old will lead the Swans following the departure of head coach Alan Sheehan, and will be assisted by Martyn Margetson, Kris O'Leary and Richard Stearman.
“As previously outlined, the club will update supporters further on the head coach recruitment process once an appointment has been made."
Matos, who signed a two-year contract with Marítimo over the summer, is understood to remain open to the move, but the Portuguese club’s stance has frozen talks — and Swansea now face the possibility of having to reassess their shortlist if the fee cannot be met.
Marítimo, meanwhile, say their relationship with Matos remains intact, adding: "Maritimo maintains the right to defend its interests and can guarantee it maintains a full harmony and an open dialogue with Vitor Matos, reinforcing trust and alignment towards its sporting goals."
Swansea travel to Bristol City on Saturday before hosting Derby County next Tuesday.
