Ryan Giggs has become a stronger favourite to succeed Chris Coleman as Wales manager following interviews for the job conducted by the FAW.
Giggs’ odds with the bookmakers have shortened after the former Manchester United star put his case to a selection panel on Friday, along with fellow candidates Osian Roberts, Craig Bellamy and late contender Mark Bowen.
The FAW is expected to make their choice within days for a post that has been vacant since Coleman left for Sunderland.
But Giggs’ position as the most likely candidate seems to have hardened with Sky Bet now making him 2-7 for the post, ahead of Bellamy who is 4-1.
Giggs, 44, has been out of work since leaving his role as Old Trafford No.2 under Louis van Gaal in 2016, although he was interviewed for the Swansea City job before it eventually went to former manager Francesco Guidolin.
Asked last month if he would consider the Wales job, Giggs said: “Of course I’m interested.
“I played for Wales, I’ve said that I want to go back into coaching, and that is obviously one of the top jobs.
“I played for United, I played for Wales – those are the two jobs. I’ve not spoken to anyone at the moment but I’d definitely be interested.”
Like Giggs, his former Wales teammate Bellamy has no front line permanent managerial experience, although he is currently working with the Cardiff City academy.
Roberts has also never managed a leading club, although his coaching experience far outweighs that of Giggs and Bellamy and his influence was widely acknowledged during his successful time working alongside Coleman.
Bowen also has plenty of experience to offer, having worked as Mark Hughes’ assistant before they were recently sacked by Stoke City as well as when Hughes was in charge of Wales, Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham and QPR.
The FAW are keen to get their choice in place as soon as possible with the draw for the new Nations League due to take place in Switzerland in two weeks’ time.
