Swansea boss Graham Potter is hoping his side can benefit from a Wilfried Bony bounce when the Ivorian finally returns to full fitness in the next few weeks.
The 29-year-old former Manchester City striker hasn’t played since tearing his cruciate ligament against Leicester City in February, but Potter believes he is almost ready to return.
“He’s not far from joining the group, but he felt a bit of tightness in training earlier this week so we’ll see how that reacts. At this point we just have to make sure we take good care of those little setbacks or feelings,” said Potter.
“As a footballer, he’s got some attributes that, with the greatest respect, are above the Championship. That’s the truth.
“He brings a presence, a footballing ability and a presence in the box. If we can get him back to himself, enjoying his football, contributing to the team, I wouldn’t fancy marking him, that’s for sure.”
Potter could really do with another front runner to share the workload with Scottish international Oli McBurnie, who has scored four goals in eight outings to date this season.
“Any player, not just Oli, would benefit at this level from a fit Wilfried Bony. Oli can lead the line, of course, but he will also benefit from some support,” added Potter.
The Swans are 10th in the Championship with 12 points and travel to face Tony Pulis’ second-placed Middlesbrough on Saturday. (September 22)
Bony arrived for a second spell at Swansea in August, 2017, signing in a £12m move from Manchester City – the club for he left south Wales in a £28m move in January, 2015.
However, he scored just twice in 15 appearances before his injury last season and the Swans were relegated after seven seasons in the top flight.
