By Tom Prosser New Swansea City signing Flynn Downes is eager to start working with his new gaffer Russell Martin and has revealed the former MK Dons boss played a big in his decision to move to South Wales. “I am buzzing to be here, it’s a massive club and I cannot wait to get going,” said the 22-year-old. “I spoke to the gaffer, and I just liked the way he came across, the players they have got and it all just added up for me. “The style of play massively appeals to me, I played against the gaffer’s side with Ipswich last year and I think we only touched the ball about four times during the entire game.

New Swansea City signing Flynn Downes is eager to start working with his new gaffer Russell Martin and has revealed the former MK Dons boss played a big in his decision to move to South Wales.

“So, when this came up, and I knew he was going to be here it was a dream move.

“The way he wants to play football appeals to me massively.”

Martin who was only appointed as Steve Cooper’s replacement 10 days ago admitted he’s been a long term admirer of Downes.

“He’s a player that we had a look at in my previous club. Unfortunately we were well priced out of the market,” said the head coach.

“When we came here and we realised that the owners were willing to back us on Flynn, we were really grateful for that.

“They understand what a good signing he can be, not just short term but long term.

“Young, hungry and athletic, an excellent player, felt he needed a fresh start.

“He’s played in the league before at a very young age so he ticks all of the boxes for us.”

Downes will now be in contention to make his Swansea debut on Saturday at home to Sheffield United.

On the pitch, Swansea comfortably beat a young Reading side 3-0 in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.

The Swans goals came from defenders Joel Latibeaudiere and Ben Cabango whilst striker Joël Piroe who’s a recent signing from PSV scored his first competitive goal for the club.

Martin is delighted with how his new team have taken on board his instructions so far.

“I’m really pleased with so much of the stuff we saw tonight. It felt like it was progress from Saturday. I said to the guys ‘no game of football is easy despite the youth of their team’. Ours wasn’t exactly very experienced or very old,” said 35-year-old, Martin, who previously played as a defender for Norwich.

“We’re really early on with what we want to do and what we want to be, but I’m very grateful for the players and their willingness to try to do what we’re asking them to do.”
