Merthyr Town play the second of five consecutive Southern League home matches when title-chasing Chippenham Town visit Penydarren Park on Tuesday (tonight, 7.45pm).

The Martyrs defeated a poor Kings Langley team 5-0 over the weekend and now take on a far sterner test against the Bluebirds.

The visitors are currently nine points behind leaders Leamington, but have two games in hand, while a win for Merthyr would lift them above Chippenham.

Former Newport County striker Andy Sandell, who leads Chippenham’s attack, is top scorer in the Southern League Premier, having netted 18 goals including six penalties, while strike partner David Pratt has weighed in with another 18 in all competitions.

Kayne McLaggon leads the way for Merthyr on 12.

The two teams are top of the scoring charts in the division. The Martyrs have fired 45 and Chippenham have netted 48.

Chippenham, though, have conceded more goals than any other of the top five clubs and are currently on a run of three games without a win.

They drew 2-2 against Biggleswade Town, lost 3-2 against Cinderford Town and finished 3-3 against Slough Town.

Chippenham paid two visits to Penydarren Park last season when the Martyrs earned a 3-1 win in the Red Insure Cup during January with two of the goals scored by ex- Swansea City winger Kerry Morgan in what was to be his last appearance for Merthyr.

Merthyr also defeated Chippenham 2-0 in a League clash.

Player-manager Gavin Williams has added Eliot Richards to the 16 who were on duty against Kings Langley last Saturday.

Match sponsors are Mikerry Rail, with JNP Legal again sponsoring the match ball.
