Goalkeeper Jordan Wright is the latest player to join the David Hughes era at Newport County, and the shot stopper brings a wealth of experience to Rodney Parade, despite being just 26 years of age.

David Hughes says new goalkeeper Jordan Wright can play a "big role" at Newport County in the future having joined the Exiles on the final day of June.

The goalkeeper sealed a switch from Grimsby Town to Rodney Parade and will now compete with fellow summer addition Nik Tzanev for a starting berth.

Boss Hughes said: “We’re really pleased to welcome Jordan into the team.  He’s got experience and he’s got youth on his side.

"Lee (Kendall) was keen to bring in someone that fits the profile that we needed and with Jordan, we feel that he can play a big role for us going forward.”

Wright becomes the League Two club's sixth signing following the arrivals of goalkeeper Tzanev, defender Lee Jenkins, central midfielder Matt Smith and forwards Ged Garner and Michael Reindorf.

The 26-year-old started his career with Nottingham Forest and went on to have spells with Alfreton Town, Kettering Town, Grantham Town, Nuneaton Borough, Alloa Athletic and Hereford before joining Lincoln City on a permanent deal in 2022.

He spent two seasons with the Imps prior to sealing a transfer to Grimsby last summer.

Wright featured 37 times across all competitions for the Mariners during the 2024-25 campaign.

Discussing his move to Rodney Parade, the goalkeeper said: “We (Wright and David Hughes) had a really good conversation about the way he wants the team to play, the standards around the place, and the ambition he has for the season. It’s an exciting time to be here and I’m buzzing to be part of it.

“Personally, I want to make the shirt mine, work hard every day, and keep as many clean sheets as possible. As a team, we all want to finish as high in the table as we can and push for something special.”
