Swansea City and Wales defender Joe Rodon has been ruled out for “a few months” according to his manager Sreve Cooper – putting an end to his Euro qualifying campaign with Wales. The centre back missed today’s 1-0 derby victory over Cardiff City at the Liberty Stadium after suffering two recent ankle injuries. The second of those – picked up in the home defeat to Brentford – means Rodon requires an operation and means he will be out for a number of weeks.

That will make him unavailable for Wales’ vital two remaining qualifiers next month in Azerbaijan and at home to Hungary.

“First of all I’m disappointed for Joe, he picked up a fresh injury on Tuesday night,” said Cooper.

“We were a little bit worried because he had a knock on the ankle last week which he was trying to play through so we thought it was an extension of that. But it’s a new injury that’s ruled him out for a few months. He’s going to need an operation next week.

“He’s got a tendon injury that rules him out of the Wales games too. We’re disappointed for him, but what hurts him will make him stronger.

“He was close to tears. I think it hit home yesterday when he knew he wasn’t going to play. But he stood by the side of the team and didn’t leave us for one minute. That’ s disappointing for him. But we look forward to welcoming him back and looking after him through his rehab.
